Bought a new Bike

Well the DRZ 400 and I have parted company. The blunt truth is that I just didn't like it, I could not get comfortable on it so it wasn't getting used for what I bought it for.

Sold it for what I paid for it so for the small number of miles I did it was a cheap lesson.

Roll forward to this week.

I saw an ad for a 1981 R100RS JPS special on the Airheads downunder page.

It looked fantastic and best of all I know the mechanic who has worked on it for the past little while and not only do I trust his judgment, he gave the seller a glowing character reference.

So.....this happened.

The 1981 Australia only R100RS JPS special was the result of inadequately secured containers on a ship resulting in damage a a fair number of BMW bikes being imported into Australia. This co-incided with a local BMW supported car racing team, sponsored by JPS kicking a few goals and offering a deal to BMW Australia.

30 JPS special R100RS bikes were created, they are entirely a badge engineered thing and offer zero perfomance advantage over a stock BMW.

But they do come with a non BMW standard black paint (has some red in it), gold pin-striping, JPS badges and a number.

I couldn't help myself.

Beautiful bike! And that garage is, um, cleaner than my lounge room.  :-)

I'd seen JPS paint jobs (on a K75S?) but had assumed that they were after market, I had no idea that they came from the factory.

My workshop cleanliness is mediated by my laziness, being semi-open and having a lathe slinging oil and chips in it.o

Well my planned second significant BMW purchase has ended in failure. For the past week I have been negotiating with the seller of a low mileage MKM1000.

The bike has a problem - all the seller's own work - he had to change the clutch carrier and didn't know about blocking the crankshaft. The engine is now locked up with unknown damage resulting from the thrust washers falling off their locating pins.

The seller wanted the same price as a pristine, running example changed hands for in Australia about a year ago -$43k. There was no way I was paying that and when the seller bucked at having a well known mechanic attending to inspect and report, things started to get difficult.

I put in a final offer of $39k subject to a report from the mechanic, but the seller has ceased responding to emails and has blocked my phone.

Ah well, have to find another one. In the meantime I have a lead on a nice RSR1000 and am going to inspect a K1 this weekend (the K1 is as cheap as chips and I suspect one day they will be worth a lot).

Assume you mean the K1? Looking at one that has been repainted, the owner has the complete graphics kit but ran out of courage to fit it. It also has the BMW soft pannier kit for the K1 which would probably be the only set they ever sold.

Anyway, $6.4k Australian buys it.

I shot from the hip on my $10K estimate. Closer inspection shows the bikes selling for $12.5-$15.0K US..........These bikes were the cats meow. Your's sounds like a smok'n deal

£24,000.00 GBP? Yikes!

K bikes are incredibly cheap in the UK. Half the price of a decent airhead. A nice R90 can be had for around £3,500 to £5,000. R65s from £2,500 up now (for a slightly doggy one).

K75 & K100? £2,000.00 for lowish mileage and clean. £1,500.00 rideable but high mileage or grubby.

I sent the JPS pic to my friend who has "Airhead" written like a stick of rock in his neck and he was seriously drooling 

Anything Airhead over ~£6,000.00 had better be special, particularly a non-runner with potentially very serious engine damage. 43K AUD? Really?  I'd better jump back in the pond at this point.
