It's been pretty brutal the last 10 days or so on the motorcycles .  :D

Got home from work yesterday and didn't feel very good either, spent most of the day outside .

Time to crawl back into the cage until the heat-wave lets up.  I decided a couple years ago that the bike would stay in the garage on days where it would just make me miserable...  :(

My R65 is the first air cooled vehicle I have owned.  What happens when one overheats?  Does it just stop?  Or will it keep running until something really bad happens to the head and engine?

I have never had an engine overheat to that point, I would think it would start running poorly and if you kept on, it would stop .

I think you would get a lot of pre-ignition or "pinging" before it got hot enough to hurt anything.

If Bob, with 125 degree air and 175 degree :o streets doesn't have a problem.....it's gottta be a non issue for the rest of us.

Weather is strange.

There has been a heat wave in southern Europe with temperatures above 40C in some areas.

Yet I've just come home from a few days away at a latitude much further south than Europe and even slightly further south than where Bob is and while the sun was very strong, the temperature never rose above 27C  (80F)

It was Madeira, an island 500 miles off the coast of Africa so the ocean moderates the temperature. Lots of bikes and scooters and they didn't look uncomfortably hot.

Back home it's a bit of a let down with a dull damp day at 14C
57F  :(

Humidity has a great effect on temperature as the  humidity rises, it acts as  insulation, it prevents the air from getting hotter, but it also reduces cooling overnight .

The high temps I had here the past two weeks,  the humidity was under 5%, if the humidity goes above 15 %, you won't see temps in the 120 F range .

That makes sense as the humidity in Madeira was typically 60% and the temperature held up over night.

The temp went back up to 118 F, 48 C, this afternoon  .

Ty-wrapped a wireless temp transmitter to the left lower fork stanchion on the oilhead around cylinder height .

Highest temp I had on the receiver, was 151 F, 66 C .

This was no traffic on the way home from work on a urban expressway about 70 mph, 115 km/hr .

I'm glad that I have a commute to and from work, less than 15 minutes, I don't know if I would ride in these temps, if my commute was significantly longer !!!!!!!!!!!!

I ran away to Butte, Montana for the summer. Unfortunately could only take one bike and opted for my F6B Goldwing for the long ride. My R65 is home in Tucson in the garage.  Great rides and views here with little traffic. Next year I may try to trailer and bring both my babies.

Lordcargo, sounds like a great way to escape the unrelenting furnaces of hell here in the northern Sonoran desert of Aridzona !!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8-)

113 F, 45 C, at 1430 when I got off of work today .

The temp indicating dipstick on the '81 R65, showed 110 F, 43 C, before starting the engine .

Got home and checked the tire temps, front 147 F, 64 C, rear tire 157 F, 69 C .

Road surface temp in front of my house, 167 F, 75 C .
