Labor Day Holiday Weekend, US Members
« on: September 02, 2017, 07:49:07 PM »
Well, it's early September, the Labor Day holiday in the US, a three day weekend for most US residents .

Any US members have any plans for this repreive from the usual  5 work week ??

I'm currently in Houston, Texas, filling in for employees for the airline I work for , a majority of employees in the Houston area, can't get to work, no home, no vehicles, living in evacuation shelters, with the clothes on their backs .

I can't imagine the situation they are dealing with !!!

I'm on 12 hour shifts, living in the aircraft maintenance hangar here in Houston, with electrical power, hot showers and all the MRE's you can handle !!!!!!!!!!

MRE, meals ready to eat, courtesy of the US military !!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meal,_Ready-to-Eat

But, I'm forever thankful that I'm not impacted by this situation .

It's only a temporary condition for me .

It's a humbling experience, to see a massive humanitarian situation, set out before you .

Most people have no idea, how close you live on the knife edge of existence .

Bob, my thanks and prayers are with you and all of your co-workers who have stepped up to give assistance to those in need. My thoughts and prayers go out to those impacted by this disaster. I grew up and have lived most of my life in So FL and the SoEast US so I have loved through or have assisted in recovery of a number of major storms. You do what you have to do to survive, to help others and in the end you live through it. Thank you to everyone who has provided assistance. It is APPRECIATED!

Marcmax, I was involved in the evacuation of residents in New Orleans after hurricane Katrina devastated the region .

I was in amazement, that this was happening in the US, it seemed that this was only a situation that occured in lesser developed countries .

This country is not anywhere near prepared for a major catastrophe, should it arise .

Bob, I understand your concerns. My brother was at Homestead AFB in So FL when Hurricane Andrew put all of So FL back 100 years technology wise. I had good friends in Charleston when Hurricane Hugo did the same thing. I remember as a child having the side of our house caved in by the roof of a neighbors that blew off and caved in our house, This is not new. just the intensity has been elevated, I pray for us all. and I am not an overly religious individual.

Bob, other than having HUGE FTL escape vehicles and other planetary bodies to relocate to it would be pretty hard to plan for a lot of disasters.  Houston area is so freakin' big, millions of people, and low elevation.  I suppose everybody could build their homes out of concrete atop 20' poles...  I personally feel that low lying areas like this should be "phased" out.  If you live there, get bailed out, and decide to stay then no handout (other than life-saving) next time.  That may sound callous but ya can't fight Mother Nature.  I just hope Irma decides to hook north or we, as a country, will definitely be in some serious hurt...

All that said, this is how I'm spending today, cooking for a mob, two big slabs of spare-ribs that I had to cut up to make 'em fit.  This was after 2 hours and I had just flipped them - 2 more hours and then an hour or so wrapped in foil in the oven to finish!

We're gonna eat about 5ish so if you hurry you might be able to pull in here about suppertime!

I was disappointed when Katrina hit and GOV funds went to rebuild in areas that should never have been built in first place. Rebuild the town on high ground or fund the restoration yourself

That meat looks great Justin !!!!!

I was more referring to the most foreseeable catastrophes, hurricanes on the Gulf coast and the Atlantic coast of the US .

For 6 months of the year, June 1st, to November 30, hurricane season here in the US, you are at risk for losing everything you have, if you live within 100 miles or so of the coast .

California is nowhere near ready to handle a massive earthquake, that will happen eventually .

A timely article today, about the risk to California from a massive earthquake .

We're coming up on the peak of hurricane season in the US, the worst may still be coming . :(

Here's the next hurricane threat to the Atlantic coast of the US .

Mike, Bob - It sure tastes good, too!  Got enough left for about 2 more meals...  ;D

Yeah, Irma looks like it could turn into a monster and it worries that they are straightening out the track a littlw.  Most of them were showing a jog to the north and the last one I saw today had a pretty much straight line to the Gulf!  That could really be something unthinkable if it hit the TX/LA coast right after Harvey... :o
