Dashboard Cameras
« on: February 18, 2016, 02:19:37 PM »
Anyone familiar or have personal experience with dash board cameras, with what I experience on a daily basis here commuting in Phoenix, I think it's a going to be useful to get one for use on the bikes and the cars .

Brands, models, what works well, what to stay away from, what features to look for, stay away from .

Bob,

We are just about to equip all of our company run vehicles with the Blackvue camera systems (covering front/rear) with the facility to record outside activity whilst the car is unattended.

Search YouTube for reviews, we have taken a good look at the market and have picked this brand.

Excellent quality kit, easy to install and good software including the ability for the system to record 'events' automatically.

I'll post up some pics when we have done the first vehicle.

Chris

GoPro cameras are a popular choice for motorcyclists, daredevils, etc.  People often mount them on their helmet, which gives a good field of vision but probably makes a lot of wind noise/resistance.

I remember there was a fellow on the forum that was racing an R65LS and he mounted a camera between the forks to record laps.

Hi Bob.  I've got a Sena 10c.  It's the Swiss Army knife of helmet cams.  It does a bit of everything ok.  It's a camera, FM radio, Bluetooth connected to my phone, or anything else that is Bluetooth.  And it is bike to bike intercom although I have yet to ride with somebody else that either has a intercom or has an intercom and wants to use it.  One of the biggest surprises was finding another person with a Sena but finding that the person didn't want to be connected to another person who might have a serious problem (accident).  That was kinda a shock.

I put in a 32 gig card so it can record in high def a lot of video.  But the card will outlast the battery and when I plug in external power, FM reception goes to hell!

I find myself at night with the camera plugged into the computer recharging the battery and I'm cleaning off the card of non eventful rides.  There is one ride that I haven't looked at though.  I dropped the Firebird in a slow hairpin two weekends ago by over braking the front wheel.  I was recording at the time.  I haven't gone back and looked at that vid.

Instead of speakers I use the 1/8" jack so I can plug in my Etymotic ear buds.  I cannot tell you how handy the phone feature has been.  Btw I have a second mount installed on my bicycle helmet.  The speakers are used there.

Dash cameras are cool but different.  Kinda like a high maintenance girlfriend.

Btw - just using FM with the Bluetooth connected to the phone the camera will last most of the day.  The camera function, when turned on with the FM And Bluetooth will last about 1.5 hours recording.  After the camera quits due to battery low the FM and blue tooth will still run for a couple hours before the unit shuts down completely.

YRMV.
