One of these days I'm gonna quit buying stuff that is partially in boxes!  :-/  NC Steve gave me a heads-up on an entire r/h perch assembly on e-Bay so, since the '82 LS I picked up was missing the MC, I snagged it at a fairly reasonable price.  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]  This prompted me to develop a "spurt" of motivation so I dug through the box I had sorted all of the brake bits into and started tossing them in the solvent tank.    The closer I got to the bottom of the box the more nervous I became, as once the box was empty I was short two caliper pistons!    Well, the listing said it "looked like" most of it was there...  

Are the caliper pistons the same as from a single disc Brembo caliper?  I think if the ol' lady catches me tearing apart her caliper I would get injured, or worse.  [smiley=shoot.gif]   Soooo, I guess I'll have to scrounge a pair of pistons, a doner caliper. or convert it to single disc.  Anybody got this stuff laying around getting in the way?

Oh, and the "spurt" of motivation has now evaporated...   :-?

Sometimes it doesn't even make sense to get outa bed...  I was looking through my latest sack-o-parts from Chicago BMW, and for some reason decided to double-check the caliper rebuild kits and I ORDERED THE WRONG FREAKIN *&%&#@$ ONES!!!!    But, I guess if I live long enough I will most likely have to re-build the front Brembos on my '95 RT some day and I will have kits.  If they don't dry out in the next 15-20 years... :-/

I'll rummage through the attic and see what we have.  I considered adding the second disc to my bike awhile back and had scrounged some extra calipers.  They didn't work, of course, and I don't remember if I kept them or not...

Thanks, Aïda.  It's a shame, too, as the caliper bores were/are absolutely perfect!

Justin, is that an ATE caliper you want pistons for?  Rob found some at Motobins, if I remember right.  My local BMW dealer said NLA, which I have to admit they rarely say.  Rob probably even has the part numbers handy, which he posted on one of the previous phorums.

They only pistons they list for R45/65 are stainless steel which would be over $100 for a pair once shipped.  I started thinking today (dangerous, I know) that since I now have a lathe I can make my own.  I'll just order me a chunk of stainless stock, slightly oversize, turn it down, and I have some pistons that should never wear out.  I do have two stock ones to copy so I don't really have any excuse.  Or, I already have some aluminum stock the proper diameter and may just make tham out of that since the stockers appear to be aluminum.

If it is ATE pistons you're talking about, how much more trouble would it be to make 4 extra?

Wouldn't alloy work?  Or do you think they would just wear out too fast?  I don't think the originals are aluminum though, as I'm pretty sure mine had rust through chrome, luckily outside the seal area.

My original, pitted ones were pretty heavy, so I don't think they were aluminum.

Since you mentioned Brembo (are they ATEs?) I didn't offer my information.

I bought mine last spring, and it seems to me it was around $85 total, w/ shipping, which I considered to be a bargain, when you consider the alternative!

I mentioned it to my machine shop guy that I discovered on the next street over, and he said buying units already made is ALWAYS cheaper than having them made.

Fast delivery, too!

Rob, I'm pretty sure they are Brembos but I'll double check.  Having a machine shop turn these out for you would be rather expensive, I would imagine.  But, I might as well put this lathe I bought to use as this was one of the reasons I used to justify it's purchase!    I'll have to re-evaulate the material in the pistons, I figured aluminum as they seemed pretty light weight.  But, I can always order a chunk of stainless and make 'em out of that...
