A Surf is a hardtop 4 door Hi Lux. Nissan did a similar one called the Terrano, and Mitsubishi had the Challenger. 90% of Surfs in New Zealand will have a 2Lt, and later models the 1KZ. The petrol V6 in all these models is less powerful (torque, not hp) than the diesel and suck juice at an alarming rate, specially if you try to tow with them.
The indestructible Hi Lux seen in Top Gear had the early 2L engine, it had rockers, which snapped when a cambelt broke. The later 2L had buckets, and when a cambelt breaks it pushes the valves and buckets up, breaking the camshaft into 5 pieces. Early 2Lt's used to drop valve seats. The 1KZ has a half speed cambelt, lasts much longer and I've never seen one break yet. Both engines have cast iron heads, which is a good thing compared to the Mitsi engines, but overheat one and it's guaranteed to crack.
We did get the 22R here, more common were the Y engines - 1Y, 2Y 3Y and 4Y. 200cc increments from 1600cc to 2200cc, a lot of coverage in one engine type.
