Luggage for R65LS
« on: April 03, 2015, 09:47:44 PM »
Once again the search function is not helping me...I have no idea what I am doing wrong.

Anyway, I have a question on luggage for the R65LS. I have a 1982 model being built up for me. Picture is below.

I have a back luggage rack not pictured but is on the bike. You can see the luggage frame on the side.....what specifically is different on the LS versus the standard and what do I look for when trying to find BMW luggage? I went to BMW's site and I think these parts are obsolete.

The luggage frame I have looks like the one on Max's BMW microfiche site but I am confused on which case...the 46-0044 or 46-0101?

Do I have the correct frame?

Also, how hard is it to get these cases without paying $250 each from that website?

Thanks in advance.....

Begin searching the "www" for used OEM bags. They come up on the market on occasion but the good ones are never cheap. One concern with the BMW bags is the latching system can un-latch itself as you ride along, strewing your dirty boxer shorts, socks and road trip souvenirs along some busy highway.

The Internet BMW Riders site has a Marketplace. Check there and consider posting an ad in the "Parts Wanted" section. http://www.ibmwr.org/ Also, post an ad here in the R65 Asylum.

eBay is another option.

Happy hunting.

The original R65 and R65LS OEM pannier frames were the same item.  The difference was that the R65 back rack that went across the rear of the seat fairing would not fit on the LS due to its different profile.

It appears that your pannier frame and back rack are non-OEM.  An OEM pair of panniers will fit on both.

I have no experience with the earlier Krauser style of pannier and their frames, so cannot comment.  I am told by a long time BM friend who imports racks/bags, etc, that Krauser style of panniers are still made.  (The Krausers are the skinnier ones)

When looking at pannier frames, they crack when the lower leg joins the frame directly behind the rear shock absorber.  Very obvious if this is the case.  Easiest solution is to weld a gusset into that area.  Also the frames require a lower brace welded between both pannier frames at the rear to assist with this.  As some one who went on all the rough roads with overloaded panniers (as you do in Oz) these are simple fixes to prevent problems when a loooong way from home.

The latches which attach the pannier to the frame have a double claw type arrangement and these wear and the panniers being a loose fit rattle, and it just gets worse causing them to fracture. One broken, is okay but both will cause pannier to fall off.  The remedy to this is to fix a strap around the pannier to the frame/seat to keeping it solid to PREVENT movement and damage.  I think the latches came with a rubber insert originally but may be mistaken.

When BMs were packed in their crate for transport and sale they were tied down with two 1 inch wide white straps which were just the thing for holding on the panniers.  A bit of pain when travelling to access the inside of panniers but less worry about panniers removing themselves in flight.

I hope this info helps.

Yes the the latches do have a rubber insert which wears/deforms over time leading to looseness. I never travel without a 'bungy" cord around the pannier and the frame after suffering seperation on a dark wet night. If really loaded also put another bungy acros the seat connecting the 2 pannier handles. and no I don't wear both belt and braces.

No, you do not have the correct frame

The correct frame for you mode will look like either the first or second photo below.

The 3rd and 4th photo are of my unfitted Krauser frames which better shows the bracketry needed to mount them. The frames you have are (I think) for a monoshock. As far as i know, Krauser and BMW bags will interchange aside from different frame lock strategies - but don't let that worry you, neither is worth a nugget of goat $hit - always secure bags using flat luggage ties.

Your picture does not show it but it looks like you have a Luftmeister rack and bag mounts. The BMW bags that have the claw latch will work on those mounts. Those mounts don,t have the tabs for the seat belt buckle type latch.  They can be modified forthis type or foe the HB bags that are a claw type but what they grab are bolted to tabs the seat belt buckle use. I did this to my R90/6.
