I, too, have stopped procrastinating...
« on: September 08, 2013, 08:46:48 AM »
...as mentioned in a recent post.

Cue rant mode

Just recently, I have made the decision to stop procrastinating. I've decided to quit reading and/or commenting on any and all forum posts that contain massively oversized photos.

It's always been an inconvenience for a limited return. So, -just as John Nance Garner (FDR's vice president) once characterized the VP's office as not being "worth a bucket of warm spit." -it was my simple solution to an ongoing annoyance.

I agree Monte.

The advent of digital cameras with a trillion megapixels is becoming a curse for those that have to manage servers.

I always re-size pictures not just from a viewing perspective but because of the disc space that large images take up on the server. There are some forums that no longer accept uploaded pictures at all because this problem got out of hand.

If your operating system doesn't have an image re-sizer built in. Paint.net is a simple free progaram that will do the job.

Is it possible for the moderators to reduce the file size limit ? I know that picking a particular limit would not mean pics were all a set size but it could eliminate the really big ones.

I just tried and the only way I can see to resize it, is to move the photo to 'My Computer' and then to a photo service like Photobucket, then resize it and repost it .

I personally don't have the enthusiasm for this .

Unless Justin or nhmaf know how to do this on this site, I haven't seen anything in admin mode to accomplish this .

If shooting with a digital camera, simply set the Image Mode to VGA. Photos will be captured at 640x480 which is ideal for posting to the forum... this one or any other forum. No need to run 'em thru any photo modification program although a free, web-based storage site like PhotoBucket will still be required for most folks.

Camera phones? I dunno as I don't have nor want one. Seems camera phone images are the the biggest issue with these giant bed sheet pics being posted.

One of these days, this forum could be booted from our web host for simply hogging too much space.

And Bob, you are not responsible for nor need to be correcting other folks image posting errors. You and Rob and Justin already do enough.

BTW, is keel hauling illegal?

Or, possibly the oversize photos can be deleted by an admin member adding verbiage to the post that it was removed for being too large for the site.

Then the poster needs to resize it and repost it.

I started doing this today, so you should see it occasionally in a posting .

So, now I'm the inactive member 'Nazi', along with the oversize picture 'Nazi' . ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

I thought that the coppermine server sould resize pics, but if it could, I can now no longer figure it out.   With embedded URL-linked pics from other sources like photobucket, facebook, etc., I don't know if we could do anything about it, except maybe through the forum's style sheets it could just truncate off the right side anything that extends beyond the frame width.    I'm not up on these newer bits of web page stuff yet, and it would possibly require some mods to the YABB forum code..  Maybe Suraklyn would know..

I limit my pics to no more than 800x600 - I use 640x480 (VGA resolution) unless I want to make sure that details are clear

The CBR250R forum I use is "powered by" vBulletin.
http://www.cbr250.net/forum/

On it, if you link to (embed) a photo from another source, and it is too large to fit the message area, it automatically resizes it with a bar across the top that allows you to click and see the original size picture.
http://www.cbr250.net/forum/142111-post1.html

That site also offers thumbnail attachments that when clicked on, open in a new window full size.  Those, I would imagine, are taking up the forum's server space.  I try to link to mine from my PBase account.

If your computer has Windows 7 it's easy to deal with this problem. Even I can do it and I'm no computer nerd. Use the "start" menu to find "Windows live photo gallery", then use USB cable to download photos (after making sure your camera type comes up on the screen). Photos will then appear after a few seconds. Click on the one you want, and go to "file", then in that go to "resize". Click on the default resize which is I think 800x600 mm, this is a good size for posting on the website. Then transmit the photo. Just make sure you send the resized version as both will appear side-by-side on the screen.

Do some sites have a "photo re-sizer"? Craigslist and ebay seem to take anything I toss their way.

Would seem logical to have the site make the picture size correct,  rather than having 500 posters resizing pics individually.

The R65 Forum is provided server access gratis from the son of our founder and chief, " El Jefe" Justin. As such, we are very small potatoes compared to the financial strength and capabilities of eBay, Craigslist and similar others. I do hope those that find help on the R65 Forum are contributing a few bucks to help keep us "up" and as a way to say thanks. Those posting overly large photos threaten our forum's very existence.

We, and that includes everyone who posts photos, should observe the rules of our road. I don't think it's asking too much from all posters. The number of ridiculously large photos on this site is increasing at a dramatic rate. It sounds harsh but what's occurring may lead to our shut down -so those that either cannot, will not or refuse to meet forum specifications should consider not posting any photos.

Moderators are now deleting overly large photos as quickly as they can. I appreciate their efforts on the R65 Forum's behalf.

Bottom line: It's only logical that all photos are to specification.

Anyone having size issue (pics... get your minds out of the gutter) can download this for free and it is one of the simplest picture editing tools out there.

http://www.irfanview.com/

All you need to do is open the pic, click "image" then "resize" and select the size. Save it and you are done

Bob,

Just to be clear I wasn't suggesting earlier that you or any of the moderators should have to re-size pictures that are already posted.

What I was proposing, if there is a setting that can be adjusted somewhere, is a reduction in the max. size of attachment that can be posted from the current level of 3096KB so that they couldn't be posted in the first place.

I realise that would also restrict files like PDF's but a file is a file and will fill the server up just the same. I don't know how far it should be reduced as even taking it down by a factor of 3 to 1MB would still allow large pics but it's a start.
