Surfers?
« on: July 08, 2013, 12:40:34 AM »
I've just finished doing the security for a major surfing event on the ASP world tour. Now, as I originated in Rhodesia ( Zimbabwe)  - where apart from many other things there is no surf due to the country's lack of proximity to the sea, I had an extremely frustrating time with the organizers ( All surfers!) who seemed to have the planning skills of a muppet. Everything thing was "It will be all right on the day, don't worry"
Now I am trying to figure out WHY?
I can only put this down to a couple of reasons:
1. They have landed on their heads in shallow water.
2. They have ingested too much sea water.
3. They have been hit on their heads by other surf boards.
4. They have been eating surfboard wax.
5. They smoke strange herbal substances.

Would anybody be able to enlighten me further?

Surfers, especially those who are really good and spend much of their time surfing, share many personality traits -  the same might be said of riders of motorcycles, especially those of specific brands.

As much as we might consider it Zen-like to have a machine well setup and smoothly, rhythmically taking curves on a backroad, they feel about waves on their board.  But, as we BMW airhead riders like to be like boy scouts - prepared for most eventualities, resourceful, frugal (.ie. "cheap"), friendly and helpful; the surfers' personality traits are generally from the palette of : laid-back, calm, easy-going, unhurried, flexible, undemanding.   They take the opportunities that the ocean gives them when it wants to give them, and don't sweat it if the ocean is uncooperative that day.  This attitude kinda pervades their whole being.      They are definitely cut from a different cloth than most.   But, we can still appreciate the "carpe diem" aspects that both motorcyclists and surfers have to share.

We can't all live in Hawaii. after all.

Surfers have their own timeline through life following the cycles of nature, the ocean and the weather. All of them have to be in harmony to achieve the nirvana that the surfer is seeking.

But don't count out the fact that they are probably whacked out on their own personal herbal smoking material!

Keep your bike in good repair: motorcycle boots are not comfortable for walking.
