Close Call Today
« on: February 28, 2013, 08:03:17 AM »
I was on my usual morning commute to work this morning .

I was in the far left hand lane, right next to the 5 foot high (1.6 m) concrete barrier between the opposite direction traffic .

About 150 feet (50 m) behind me, there was a large orange fireball with a dull thud noise, a few seconds later, another one .

A truck in the opposite direction traffic, hit the concrete barrier and went part way over it into my direction of traffic .

A coworker was about 30 seconds behind me and said that there was flammable liquid across all 5 lanes of the pavement and shut down traffic going in my direction .

You just never know !!!!!!!!!!!!

You were either really lucky or your guardian angel was watching out for you.  That was one bad crash, and mere seconds away from you.  Glad you are safe.

Interstate 10 is about the only east west limited acess highway in the southwest US, it has heavy truck traffic 24 hours a day .

Quite common to hear of major incidents involving trucks in the early morning hours on I-10 in the Phoenix metro area, the best answer that officials come with up, is driver fatigue, the most common time  frame for these incidents, is between 3 and 6 AM .

I've driven that super slab. Crazy even in daylight with most folks behaving themselves. Fast, though. Sorta like the Gulf Freeway -they sure named it right- south outta Houston on the way to The Island.

Glad you rolled through safely, Bob. Probably looked like Mad Max out there.

No doubt clean living an a life of piety had a lot to do with it.  That and being just plain lucky!  Glad to hear that you cleared that in time.

Something similar happened to me about 20 years ago.  On my way to work on I-30 I was in the middle lane with one car in the right lane about 100 yards ahead.  He took an exit too fast, clipped one of those 60ft light standards on the right side.  As I went past, the light pole began to totter and then fell across the freeway right behind me.  All I could see in the mirror was cars skidding to a stop and there was no one behind me for the next five miles.

Like I said, clean living! ;D
