Wet Jacket....what to do?
« on: December 24, 2012, 10:48:12 AM »
I had just made a trip to the market and when I got home I left my jacket and helmet on the bike and went into dinner.

After dinner I fell asleep on the floor between two dogs and didn't awaken until 5:30 this morning listening to the rain fall. Bike helmet and leather jacket still in the driveway, all soaked.

Is there anything I can do for the jacket, now or after it drys to care for it? I have ruined a pair of boots trying to accelerate the drying process so I have the jacket hung in the garage on a hanger away from any heat source.

Thanks for any tips , it's a damn nice jacket and I would hate to see it cracked and raggedy

The best thing to do is to let it dry naturally. Make sure you have some leather conditioner handy and before it gets completely dry (about 80-90% dry) rub in the leather conditioner. I do it with my fingers so I can tell if there are any rough patches that need a little extra attention.

I have a Fieldsheer leather jacket that is almost 20 years old and is still as supple as the day I bought it. I lost track of how many times I have been caught in a downpour wearing it.

Once it is dry you might want to give it a rub down with mink oil. It will make it shed water. It won't be waterproof but it will be a lot more water resistant. Easy to find at any store that carries boots.
Keep your bike in good repair: motorcycle boots are not comfortable for walking.
