registration nightmare!

the mot station who did the bikes mot , got the chassis number one digit out , can't register bike till rectified effing nightmare . been on phone ages trying to sort it , cant mot testers wear glasses if they need 'em? sigh pic uploaded 3 or a 5?

I had a long drawn out registration process when I moved to Aridzona .

If you bring a vehicle from out of state, it needs an inspection before a new Aridzona title and license plate are issued .

At least on the US bikes, the only place the entire VIN is located, is a foil sticker on the right side of the frame, below the right cylinder .

The numbers on the sticker on my bike were not fully legible .

I learned through a coworker that also rode BMW's, that at one of the inspection stations one of the inspectors was a BMW motorcycle enthusiast and fully understood that after 20 some years, the stickers are not very legible, went to that inspection station and I had everything done in an hour !!!!!!!

If I remember correctly, two of our members here MrRiden and Mike V, had similar issues when first getting their bikes registered in Aridzona and California.

mines in 3 places headstock , lower frame under cylinder and above filler for oil, all same , of course he checked the one where the '3' isnt 100% stamped!

In North America, on anything newer than 1980, the 17-digit VIN is NOT to be confused with the 7-digit frame serial number - or engine serial number.   It is just that delicate little foil sticker that will make or break your whole day at the motor vehicles department!

In California I have had more than a couple of times where I needed the previous owners sig on something and he lived out of state.  I just said , wait a minute, he's right out in the car. Their reply was, "just come to the front of the line when you have it signed(wink wink)"

To a group of people that are universally hated, a little kindness and humor goes a long way.

Yep, what a nightmare!  Livingdeadhead's issue is a new one for me - Although I'm not at all surprised.  I won't drag you guys through all the details I went through here in CA.  My advice outside of reviewing all paperwork produced by the governing bodies for correctness is;

1.) If you have the frame rail EPA sticker - retain it and protect it at all costs.
2.) If you plan on a lengthy resto or period of no use, don't let your current registration lapse - Fill out and file the Non-Op documents.

they're supposed to be ringing monday / tuesday to see if they can issue a new mot , without me taking to have it inspected. it'll teach me to inspect documents more closely , probably me who'll end up trailering a partially dismantled bmw halfway accross the ciy when it was one of thier agents who screwed up!

I do inspections here, and if the VIN is entered wrong it will flag it incorrect for the rego plate number....and even if you enter it with the wrong number it can't be changed my end.  We only use the last 6 digits those being the chassis number, but for a new vehicle I have to put in the full 17 digit code, and if I get that wrong, then it's wrong forever. Being dyslexic, I have to really double check my entries....but being dyslexic double checking doesn't really help - if I see 2 strings of numbers side by side they can both look the same with a reversal.

I had similar problem a few years ago here in UK, it was a BSA B44 SS but the registration document had it as B44 55. It caused trouble but i sent it back to DVLA with a letter explaining is must just be a mis-read by someone. I got a corrected document back, no problem.
