Windscreen ideas?
« on: December 11, 2006, 04:11:32 PM »
This is actually for my husband's R100...
He is looking for a small 'classic' looking windscreen to add to his '81 R100.  He's seen a couple pics on this site that intrigues him, so I thought I would give everyone the chance to speak up on what you have/had, what you liked, disliked about any windscreens you've had on your bikes.  Also any info on sources would be helpful.  I know his headlight is larger (8 inches vs our 7 inches) and that sometimes makes a difference in the fit.

I currently have a Givi windscreen, but have had several different configurations over the years.  Graham (the hubby) has been using a National Cycle Plexi 2 most recently, but had to make some minor modifications.  His ignition key is located on the side of his headlight which makes the 'legs' on the Plexi 2 a bit challenging.  He started with a 'nekkid' bike, went to the full Luftmeister fairing, back to a 'nekkid' (After riding his F650 and rediscovering the pleasure of the wind in your hair...) and now would like to try something with a little coverage, but more classic.

John, I think he particularly likes yours (from the picture in front of the Big Rondel) Check for a PM from him...

Thanks.

I bought mine from J.C. Whitney after seeing the same shield on an LS on the previous incarnation of our forum.  I forget who's bike it was.

They have a nice selection: http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Browse/tf-Browse/s-10101/N-111+10211+600014185/c-10111

You can see some pictures of mine, here: http://www.pbase.com/tomfarr/accessories

I don't really care for the additional noise it creates, myself; even with earplugs.  On the other hand, I was pounded by a miserable head wind on the way to the Boxerworks Forum rally last May.  I would have enjoyed laying down on the tank bag behind it.

So John, you up for a trade?  A Plexi 2 for your little mini screen?  The 2 still has the legs, just not quite as long...  I'll see if I can get a pic for you.

Bill, not really with the "touring" or US bars but it might with the "euro" bars.  I just wanted something to keep the bugs outa my teeth as I just ride that bike in the summertime.  I bought it from shadetreepowersports.com about a year ago for $86.99 with the tint.  It's pretty much a "universal" shield so it might fit but they make a lot of different sizes and styles.

Why don't you like your min?

John, why don’t you like you mini screen on your R65?  I think it looks good, was thinking about getting one but if yours didn’t work out.................... I am really looking more for a bug, rock deflector. That wasp that went in the narrow crack between my helmet and jacket wasn’t a lot of fun. Rather than let him keep trying to poke my jugular vein I grabbed him and let him work on my fingers till I could let go.  Yep, didn’t have any gloves on that day. Plus I seem to get pelted by a lot of loose gravel. The gravel really isn’t a problem but after the wasp think it might be time to find a small windshield that will go with the one on the sidecar. Anybody got an ideas?

MrRiden,

Were you able to use the mounts that came with the screen?
They were WAY too short for my Euro bars.  I had to make my own.

Yes the mounts werked fine on my high bars but I now want to switch to the low Euro bars. What die did you use to thread the new mounting struts and what dia bar did you use? I am still looking about for a set of euro bars if anyone has a set they want to get rid of or swap for high bars.

I went to Lowes Hardware with the original mount in hand and eyeballed it.  I think the originals are metric stock, and, of course, Lowes only sells SAE.  No luck on finding aluminum round stock.  I had to settle for steel.  But I'm sure it is out there, somewhere.

I also bought a metric tap & die set.  I forget the size I used, (I am at work), but I had to remove just the slightest amount of material, and taper the leading edge before the die would start.  I think the SAE stock was too large for the metric die.  That was my first foray into cutting threads.  Exciting and hard work at the same time.

I just put the stock in the vise after it was cut to length, and slid my cheater bar over the end to bend it, duplicating the angles of the originals.  I am considering changing the angle a little to lay the shield down a bit more, to see if that might quiet things down a little.

There is VERY LITTLE room on the low handlebar to place the mounts.  And I had to chop up a dash panel in the process.  The dash panels on the LS are quite a bit different from the std models, so YMMV.

Rob,
Sounds like a good cobble. From the picture I would have sworn that was aluminum stock you used. I'm still trying to get some low bars cheap but if I can't find any I may go to generic 7/8 drag bars. Do your bars have any rise on them? I'm also curious about the width (grip end to grip end) of the euro bars.

Rob,

I remember you saying that you had to cut up the dash panel from the last website, but I didn't know you had the euro bars at the time.  Do you think you'd still have to cut up the panel if you had the standard bars on?  I like your windshield, but not enough to mangle my dash panel.

Justin,
Did you have to alter your panel with that slipstreamer?  If not, how different are the dimensions on that R100 dash panel from an R65's?

Well, folks, I'm afraid I got spoiled by the overall protection that the Plexi-Fairing 3 offered me.  It extended out far enough on both sides to act like handguards, the lowers went down far enough below the turnsignals to keep the wind off my knees, and was tall enough to send the wind over the top of my helmet!  In short, it was as close to a full fairing as one could get with a windshield.  Sure, it was rather large (some said ugly), but I wasn't in it for looks, either.  I ride pretty much every day, rain or shine, freezing cold or blistering heat, and I think the Plexi-Fairing 3 performs better than anything else I've sat behind, except a genuine fairing.  (On my previous R65, I had a Vetter Vindicator fairing on it, and it was wonderful.  I'd love to get one of those for Britta!)   ;)
