Tire Wear

Just about ready to get a new rear tire for the oilhead, about 2 mm to the wear bars .

I was checking my maintenance records yesterday, that tire was installed 01/30/07 .

It now has just a bit under 20,000 miles, so by the time it gets replaced in the next month or so, it will have 20,000 miles on it .

Never had a rear tire last this long !

It's a Michelin  Road Pilot radial tire .

Roll these on my Triumph Trophy 900 Triple. Hard to see any appreciable wear.

The Pilot Road tires are recommended by alot of high mileage, sport touring types.   Though I've never seen anyone get that many miles out of a rear one before!  Maybe you are just more careful with you accelerating and braking

Another long distance runner is/was the Dunlop Elite II.  The set on my '81 R100 have over 12k and still look brand new!

To be quite honest, I don't think I've ever had the throttle open all of the way .

The compression braking you get with a fuel injected bike, in normal riding, you almost don't need the brakes .

Seems like in overrun conditions, the fuel injection shuts off, at least that's the way it feels .

I checked the front brake pad wear, a few weeks ago, I'm about at the 50% wear area at 40,000 miles .

So, I guess I do take it easy on the bike !!!!

That's outstanding mileage for a rear.  I run Pilot Road 2's on my R1100S and Theresa's R1100R and seldom get more than 6k on a rear.  Of course we are both pretty big people, I go almost 17 stone (look it up Monte) and on tours it's with both saddle bags full on each bike.  Wish I knew the secret to get at least 10k out of each tire.

God's own eyes! 17 stone is 238 pounds. Step away from the Shiner Bock, mi amigo.

I got ~20K out of a Michelin Macadam.  The "last 20% longer" Pilot Activ looks like it will be done somewheres about 12,000 miles.

I have a Dunlop Elite II in the back of one of my cars that I got used free from my local motorcycle store as an emergency back up.  No cracks yet.

Having the rear tire replaced today, just a bit short of 23,000 miles of use .

Thats definitely the mileage king in my book!   Ive never gotten more than 10K out of a rear tire on any bike, and usually it averages around 7K-8K.

MAybe all that heat down there has super-vulcanized the tire so it doesnt wear!

This tire, is the same as what came with the bike from the factory, the first tire and the first replacement tire lasted around 10,000 miles each .

Don't really undestand why this one lasted so long .

I've got about 11,000 miles on the Pilot Activ rear tire.  I was expecting more.

What air pressure do you run on your R1200 Bob?  I've been told by a lot of the guys in the local club that they run 41 front, 38 rear on their oilheads (non GS).

I service the tires with 40 psi rear, 36 psi front .

When they get to 36 psi rear and 32 psi front, I reservice them .
