What happened in Phoenix today?
« on: March 25, 2010, 08:36:14 PM »
Hey Phoenixians and other Arizonians,

Heard something on the news today about a truck running over a group of 10 bikers in Phoenix.  They aren't saying anything much about it except that 3 of them died and a bunch were hurt badly.  What the heck happened?   :o

CNN website doesn't even have a story on it, but they now do have a story on a big traffic accident in Kentucky.  Yikes - be careful on the roads out there, it seems people everywhere have forgotten how to drive! :-/

In the article I read, a witness spoke with the truck driver who said that he had been shuffling some papers around or something.  Eyes off the road.  9 bikes have to be more visible than any car.

HELL!  The bikes were stopped, which means either a traffic light or a stop sign.
If the bikes hadn't been there, he would have blown right through that intersection!

But I did the same thing 18 months ago.....  :-/

This guy took out not only the bikes, but also the 2 cars in front of them.   :o

Another reason to not ride in groups and to always pay attention to what's happening all around you.  When I stop at a light or stop sign I really try to be to the left or the right and not right in the middle - gives me an escape route.   I think I read that somewhere - maybe in the MSF training - and it stuck in my mind.

Here's an update, one more person involved in the incident died sometime Friday .

http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2010/03/27/20100327driver-in-phoenix-motorcycle-crash.html

The incident happened at a major arterial street intersection, chances are, that if no vehicles had been sitting at the light, the truck would have gone through a red light, possibly caused another collision, the outcome wouldn't have been much better in any case .

Thought I'd resurrect this thread with a little more information a year and a half later .

My employer has an employee blog site, a thread came up last week about driving impaired .

A flight attendant here made a posting about losing her sister in a horrific crash that was caused by a driver of a garbage truck under the influence of crystal meth, ran over motorcyclists at a traffic light, it was the same one in this news article .

Six of the motorcyclists died of their injuries, three at the scene and three later on in the hospital, three survived, but are in very bad shape, none can walk and aren't expected to, ever again.

She mentioned that the driver of the truck, for the time being has been granted a mistrial .

Why you ask ?

A legal technicality, there is nothing in any Arizona law that establishes a legal limit for impairment for crystal meth .

In her words, there is a very good likelihood of him walking away from this with no jail time  !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He has been released from jail and has his driving privileges reinstated .

WTF !!!!!

There is no justice in the world.

If there is any balance in the universe, that guy will get run over by a dozen Hell's Angels who are all high on meth.
