How Do You Post A Picture ?

OK, I finally took possession of a digital camera today .

Once I learn how to use the camera, can someone point me in the correct direction about how to post pictures on this site .

Good for you, Bob! Digi cameras are a great addition to a fella's toolbox. You'll grow to really enjoy the instant gratification afforded by these small cameras.

Hopefully, you'll possibly have something on your computer much like my Mac's iPhoto program. That's where I initially download my digital images.

From iPhoto, I will move selected images to the desktop.

Next, I open up my free photo storage albums on Photobucket; a free web-based photo storage.
http://photobucket.com/ Upload any and all pics you wish off your desktop. Again, it's all free and you can choose which photo albums to share - that would be those you wish to post to R65 dot org-  and those which you do not want to share.

When you wish to post a photo of, oh, I dunno; maybe the tires melting off your R65's rims in the middle of a Phoenix AZ summer or something... upload the image to Photobucket.

Find your image you want to post in P'bucket and scroll over the image itself. A menu will appear and you can then select "IMG code". Just copy and paste the code into your forum post and you're golden.

If I can manage this, I swear, anyone can.

Bound to be other ways. Others may chime in with their preferred image posting techniques.

Hummm... What will be Bob's first ever image posting? Got to be a classic.

And Bob, I first tried out my efforts in the "Test Section" then deleted 'em before anyone saw my screw ups.

The sad thing about digital is that so many memories will be lost, i have pictures of my Grandfather from WW1 on the Somme i fear many of my albums will be lost to the ether and a major slice of family history will be lost to the technical changes hey ho thats why i like bikes with points

Congratulations Bob.  About damn time.  

Then there is the issue of image size.
So many people here just slap up whatever size image the camera happened to be set on when taken.  Usually quite large.
DO set your camera at the largest setting practical, Bob - that will give you the most information to work with when you get around to cropping and resizing.
There are a lot of free programs online to do the basic cropping & resizing:

I think the maximum width allowed here is around 800 pixels.

This picture is 599px × 564px: (width x height)




This picture is 1600px × 1200px: ("right-click, view image" if you are using Firefox on a PC)

Lou, you just need to pick up 3 1-Gig external hard drives.  Keep two at home, updated daily or whenever you add to your image library.  Keep the 3rd in a safe-deposit box at the bank, and once a month rotate it with one of the home versions with the latest back-up on it.  
I doubt you will be able to fill 1 gigabyte in your lifetime.

And when the time comes, it will be a lot easier to make copies for your survivors!

Lou, about a month ago i mentioned to my father that i wanted to transfer there 40yr old photo slides to digital before we lose them forever. So i went out & bought a 'slide & photo' scanner machine, cost about $120, believe me that is money very very well spent . I showed dad how to use it & 2 days & 1000 odd slides later he was finished. Half of the slides i have never seen before, cause when we were kids we sometimes had a 'slide night' & dad showed us all the old slides with us kids in them but never the ones before they had kids.
Anyway it is great looking all these old pics of my mother & father when they were just 20, 21, 22yrs old. & the best news is now they can look at these pics anytime they want, just plug the USB into the TV & the way they go. He said it takes just under 2 hours to view all the pics on the TV. I think they (mum & dad) are very happy to see these old pics again.

Another thing to remember about posting pictures is if you post the wrong one or post one that is grossly too big you can change it.  When you modify a post with a picture attached you get an option to keep the original image or replace it with another one - easy.

For the more advanced picture posters (and as a challenge you can figure out how for yourself)  if you know that a picture has been used in a previous post it's possible to link to it in a new post without attaching the picture again. I assume that saves on Server space.  As someone who manages half a dozen Servers I worry about disk space every day and  often wonder who's server this forum is on.

Rob i usually re size to 600 on photobucket before posting on here, i must have forgotten to do the one of the bridge....it is pretty though.

The bridge was built in 1370 i have no idea who built it but it was a main packhorse route for traders.

The Church is a must visit for me its about 10 miles over the Yorkshire border into what historically was Westmorland now Cumbria i have stayed in the town several times at various pubs/guest houses as it is a good touring base for the Southern Lakes or the Northern Pennines.

I was a bit shocked not long ago to read that our old national census (every 10 years) results, on paper, are easily accessible for e.g. 1921 or 1961 but can be really difficult for a more recent census like 1981 because they are stored on an outdated digital format which can now only be read by a few computer labs -- which are overloaded with work. Is this correct? It's why I still get my good photos printed and in an album, and just delete the digital memory afterwards. Prints can always be scanned! And modern colour doesn't seem to fade as badly as it used to.

I posted a few pictures in the test section, kinda got it down now .

But I did learn a valuable lesson, that when you delete the pictures on Photobucket, they go away in your postings, never occurred to me that they would be deleted !

I should have a gallery of pictures of all the bikes in a few days .

If you wish to upload photos that you'd rather not share with the entire world, just create separate albums and click the 'lock' icon either locked or unlocked.

I need to create some additional sub-albums for my BMW photos. The R65 album has 365 or so photos and it's getting tough to locate specific pics to post.
