Sick of the Hype already
« on: April 15, 2011, 01:55:32 PM »
We are being bombarded with media "interest" in the upcoming royal wedding in May (wouldn't be so bad if we weren't paying for it) to the extent of being given an extra "bank" holiday on the Friday.I of course am using my time wisely.......the first Roundup of the year 4 days escape under canvas no electric no telly just a bunch of cowboys doing what they do... the perfect way to escape the Hype.
What do you do to get away from the world apart from ride ?

The world barely impinges on me in the first place.  No need to get away.

Turn off the TV and laptop...and listen to the birds outside.  Go sit on a mountaintop and watch the sunset.  Or play my horn.

I share Lou's exhaustion with the Royal wedding already and it's still 2 weeks off yet. TV is such tripe these days. We are only recently into the era of endless channels here in the UK and it soon became obvious that more is less. So I respond by watching less and less  TV and read an awful lot more. Just finished Ted Simons dreaming of Jupiter and  2 of Bill Brysons books.  If I don't want a good book to end I ration myself and spin it out by reading something else at the same time.

There is some good TV if you are selective and we still have the BBC bless them. Just watched tonight on BBC4 2 1/2 hours of Led Zepplins Robert Plant which was excellent and no adverts.

I am born up in one respect remembering watching some TV when on holiday in the US and no offence guys but it was even worse than ours.

That is why BBC America is one of my favorite channels - when I am around a cable box, which is not very often.

Rather than spend $100/month on cable TV, I just selectively buy DVDs and enjoy commercial-free TV that way.  Plus one of the advantages of big-city life is the extensive collection of movies available from the library.  Online ordering, email notices when they are available for pick-up and due to return!

Dr. Who - Oh yes!

Lou,
We even have this wedding rubbish in Indonesia - First it was that appalling movie "Eat, Pray, Love" and now we have the "Woeful Windsor Wedding" I can only be thankful I am no longer a British taxpayer!

I get no broadcast TV nor does cable reach me out here in the wilds, over 5 miles from downtown Santa Cruz.  But I haven't turned on a TV (other than to watch a DVD) in probably a quarter century.

How long are you Brits going to keep funding the Beeb so we colonials can continue to see and hear something fairly intelligent?  I hope it's a long time.

Glad you guys think we are still useful for something other than carrying your Ammo Boxes. [smiley=beehive.gif]
There have been some major spats between the BBC and our glorious political leaders in recent years so it is hard to say how long the BBC will last as  they are trying to squeezing the Beeb into submission.
They went ape when the BBC dared to question the circumstances of the so called suicide of Dr David Kelly ( former UN weapons inspector in Pre invasion Iraq ) the radio presenter merely voiced questions that most intelligent folk had been thinking about the white wash that was the Hutton Report that followed the good DR,s death bit like the magic bullet with pills.
Coverage of the Expenses scandal didn't help either
Oh and the wedding is end of April not start of May which shows how much notice i have been taking.

But you guys don't get House.

Oh, and I couldn't even sit through all of the first of the new British comedy series Outnumbered or something like that.  Guck.  Still love Last of the Summer Wine though.

I still haven't seen anything about the royal wedding.

I also am totally pissed off with the whole business. I'm no royalist. I could go on for page after page. Let's leave it with words like parasites running round the head.
