A new era in my life

Well, folks.  You will be seeing me on this forum a whole lot more in the near future.  I was just laid off work and my last day was today.    The construction industry is really really down.   I am just thinking of it as the start of new and better possibilities.  

But I'm going to take the weekend off and go up the coast for a few days and think about it all first.  Go help my friend on his house and pound some nails.  That gets the ole brain cells flushed out with fresh blood.  

I'll be back here next week, and the day after, and the day after that, and the day after that..............................  No, really!  I'll be okay.

Losing my last job, was the best thing to ever happen to me, but at the time, it didn't seem like such a positive thing !!!!

And DO take  some time to relax and clear your head and do some of those things you've wanted to do - when you start a new job you won't have any vacation time at first!   It is also a good time to re-assess where you want to be in your life and what you want to do with it - I know it helped me when I was let go in 2004 (and had to let go the ~45 people working for me at the same time). :-/

I agree, Melena.  Get out and spend a couple of days on the bike, enjoy a few rides to someplace nearby that you haven't seen before, and just enjoy the moment.  Everyone knows that being out there on a bike is very therapeutic, and will help relax you and allow you to get in a good frame of mind for a new adventure or opportunity that will surely pop up for you.  Good things happen to good people!  And YOU'RE one of the "good people"!

What do you do in construction?  New construction is down, but a friend of mine works for a company that fixes up houses damaged by fires and floods and stuff, and he's busier than a one legged man in an ass kicking contest.  

Like the others said, enjoy the time off.  Hopefully your new job will let you get away for a few days next July....

Another testimonial (hope it's encouraging rather than irritating): My last job was blown away by Hurricane Rita, at a point in life (old!) when I thought my options were increasingly limited... And after a month or so of searching (and prayer) I was offered one of the best jobs I've ever held.  I DO wish I had taken time to breathe deeply for a efw days between jobs, however-- your mini-vacation sounds like it will leave you refreshed and much better prepared for Phase II!

I've taken off a few days here to regroup.  Didn't realize I needed to do that.    Went off for a few days, then got some stuff done around here (doesn't look like it though - it needs a couple or 3 or 4 weeks of constant tossing, cleaning, scrubbing, tossing more, painting, etc., etc., etc.     )    Finally got a ride in today.   8-)  What a wonderful Autumn day it was too.     8-)

I figured a couple of weeks to let my mind get around all this and then I'll start my networking.  I know a whole lot of people from working where I did.  The right thing will come up at the right time.  In the meantime I'm letting myself chill out, be cool, relax...............any other really neat descriptive words?      Oh!  Try this one:   [smiley=bath.gif]

Melena I am so sorry to not have chimed in when you first announced the lay off from work!
You will get something else if that is what you want....I just can feel it! Times of crisis are times of opportunity. I really believe that...maybe in some sort of twisted hope-filled way. It seems to have worked for me though over the years. Any chance at all you could "retire" and redirect to something involving your crafts?? BTW Scarf wearing time coming soon!!
You have expressed being pretty pooped a lot of times and the foot healing took a lot of your energies, as did work I assume. So take it as a welcome rest and time for contemplation...and some fun riding!!!

I'm truly sorry to read your news. Having shared your experience in the past, I relate.

Looks like you have the right idea. Conditions here in the East are weird. Little or no new residential construction, but I see a lot of repair and remodeling happening. Too bad you aren't in this area—an experienced person like you could make a living freelancing.

Keep in touch, and go for a ride when things are down.
