Exhaust nuts yearly care

Just a wee reminder to everyone during off-time or even if you ride all year round....plaster some anti-seize on those exhaust nuts as best you can on a regular basis. I just loosen mine off, and slather some anti-seize on the threads every year. With this treatment, they loosen off every year without a problem. The first time I did it back when I bought the bike, they had to be sawn/chiseled off and discarded for new ones. I am now in the habit of not cranking them on to the high torque value suggested in the manual....just tight enough so there are no exhaust leaks at all. I wouldn't have a clue how to torque them on anyway without another type of torque wrench to fit the finned nut. Maybe big fish-scales???

That's what the "Tool of the Month" club is all about.  I've got my husband on that...you'd be surprised how easily you can find something to buy whether you need it now or not.  You'll eventually need it all!!!

Personally, I get a charge out of seeing used exhaust nut wrenches, which you can buy new from Bobs for about $25, go for $40-50 on eBay, like they're some sort of prehistoric, Holy Grail item!

Sue has nailed it!  I estimate that the exhaust nuts on my '81 R100 probably have about 30 lb/ft of torque on 'em.  I bought my wrenceh at the old BMW of Ft. Worth about 30 years ago.  Seems I really howled when I had to pay about $12 for it...  I guess that's why I've stuck with Beemers all this time, not about to let that expensive wrench go to waste!  

That's usually the way I pick out a new pistol, too.  I collect brass and once I have a few thousand rounds of brass I convince myself to buy something to use it in so it desn't go to waste!

I also try not to overly torque those exhaust nuts - with those big finned wrenches one could easily do that, too !
I think I need to get a new tube of antiseize as well..

So Justin, you are a reloader, too ?!

I've only been into reloading for a few years, but am looking for a  45 Colt wheelie to tinker with next.

When will we ever learn to stop picking up more and more hobbies !

justin, nhmaf, guys you remind me of my two beloved pistols (sti trojan super 38 and cz 45 cal) that i had to sell to the government , they offered us shooters a very good buyback price scheme..... hard to maintain our shooters licence here in downunder..... wish i'm living over there.....

but anyway i have my new hobby..... riding and fixing my BMW R65.....
