Aussie,

The aircraft and all of its passengers and crew, can be held in quarantine, as long as health officials deem necessary !!

The WHO (World Health Organization) just raised the flu threat to a phase 4 warning.

Localized human to human transmission of the virus.

Phase 5/6 pandemic event, widespread human infection.

I think I'm going to go camping in a remote desert area, until this is over !!!

Bob, I spent four years working in Yemen and that's a fairly remote desert area.  When I finished that duty I probably had every antibody known to man in my bloodstream, so you just can't get away from it.  On the other hand, I haven't been sick a day since I returned.  One of my sisters is a Nurse Practioner and she tells me her clinic is being deluged with calls, mostly from folks who are fearful.  There isn't much one can do other than use common sense hygiene.

Yes Justin - news just in from NZ - three members of a school trip just returned from Mexico have been confirmed as having it....

People interviewed on arriving in Aust state that some have the authorities come aboard the plane; some have been asked if they have any flu like symptoms to let cabin crew know; some say nothing has occurred; some have been quarantined....

I'd like to see our authorities get their act together.

Aussie, I hear ya.  It boggles my mind (and irritates me to no end) when I see busloads of people arriving HERE in an attempt to get away from it when there is a high likelihood they are bringing it with them!!

A few of you were wondering about the government shutting down commercial aviation, well I got a 30 second "Readers Digest ' version  from a person with a little knowledge on the subject.

After the 9/11 'event', and the SARS outbreak in Asia 4-5 years ago, apparently the Department of Homeland Security, Department of Transportation / Federal Aviation Administration, devised a plan to orderly shutdown the commercial aviation system in the US.

This is how it's supposed to work at Southwest, when the order is given by the government, all airborne aircraft will be allowed to continue on to their destination.

Upon arrival all passengers will deplane the aircraft, regardless if it is their final destination ( what happens to the passengers after that I don't know).

All 'overnighting' flight crew members will be called, and told to report to the airport immediately, the aircraft will fly to the closest city which has a flight crew / aircraft maintenance station ( Southwest has 8 throughout the country).

Flight crews will then board aircraft back to their 'home domicile' base .

Depending on availability of flight crews, 120 aircraft will be flown to each of our 4 largest heavy maintenance bases in Chicago, Dallas, Houston and Phoenix, and the remainder of the aircraft left at other cities with flight crew bases and 'line maintenance' stations, Baltimore, Las Vegas, Oakland and Orlando.

Bob, it's interesting to see what the procedure would be.  My point is, though, I don't see how they could/would shut down domestic aviation for 6 months.  I remember the short time period after 9/11 as the building I was working in at the time was a couple of miles from DFW and right on the glide-path for a S-N landing.  Standing outside was pretty freaky after a couple of hours as it was dead silent and not a plane in the sky...

I suspect there is a similar plan here in Atlanta for Airtran.

Keeping my fingers crossed and sending prayers to God that this does not happen!  :-?

I guess there are other plans as well , to shutdown the interstate highway system, in the event of some national emergency.

I know of one for the Phoenix metro area.

About 52 miles west of me is the Palo Verde nuclear power plant,  largest nuclear power plant in the world.

In the event of a radioactive release, all four interstate highways in the state would be shut down to inbound traffic.

Pretty easy to isolate Arizona, with the Colorado River on the west, and rugged mountainous area in the east, with very few roads crossing the border into New Mecico and Utah.

I've been to the US/Mexico border in the remote regions of Arizona, it's a joke, most of it is a broken down barbed wire fence, that couldn't keep cattle out.

Every once in a while you'll see a sign facing Mexico, it states that 'illegal entry into the United States is a punishable crime' .

..and with Arlin Spector "officially" switching parties, all the pieces are in place for the Obama administration to take advantage of this "crisis".

After all as R. Emanuel and Hillary Clinton have both said...."Never waste a good crisis"

I wonder what comes next??   :o

I suggest going out and riding!  I have ridden this morning -- Have you?  I was running an errand on my 1969 BSA Firebird.  It, with its new carbs, electronic ignition, Reynolds final drive chain and Barnett clutch was running flawlessly this morning.  It was converting fuel into noise at an extremely efficient rate while transporting me to my meeting.

I count my blessings every day I get to ride!!

 :)

This will be the perfect "crisis" to ram through socialized healthcare which includes coverage for illegals...  I would really hate to have to look for a new place to live, I've got too much crap to move... >:(

More people are killed by smoking than from swine flu.

More people are killed driving to and from airports than from aircraft accidents.

More people are and will be killed by using coal fired powerplants than from nuclear powerplants.

Nevertheless people keep smoking, driving  and using coal based power without fear :question :question :question

greetings from a sunny, not foggy nor damp, north with very good driving conditions
