That's a great website!  I'll definitely bookmark that one.  I'm always looking for those 'special' characters to use.

 >:( It didn't have the sign for infinity [size=14][ch8734][/size], which, acording to the character map, there is no ALT+ for this figure.  :P

So I have to cut & paste...

Heck - it won't even show up over on Boxerworks!  ;D

Cool!  I knew there should be a way to do these.  I just didn't realize it would be so easy.  I'm printing it out so I'll remember to use them now and again.

Now I'll remember how to spell Aïda's name.   ;D

Infinity? [ch8734]? It will not work everywhere for everyone..... but try this:  Alt 236

Hold Alt and press 236 on the number pad... do not use the numbers on the top row.      Laptop?  You must use the Fn key.  The font you are using must support it also.

Good luck
Neal

Hmmm................like this?   Okay, Alt 236 =  8

That's what I get.   :-?   An 8 is a sideways infinity sign I guess.

Ï  This was cut and paste.

My laptop sends me into my home page when I use alt/function/0207 using the embedded number keys.

If I try the top row of number keys, or put the num lock on, nothing happens.

Gotta be a way for the laptop to do it  :-/

Ed,

For my laptop I first have to use FN F11 to turn on the 'built in' number pad (it turns some of the letters into numbers, i.e. J=1, K=2, L=3, U=4, etc.)  Then I use ALT and JL9.  Then I hit Function F11 again to turn off the number pad.

ï -  also works with Alt 0239.

[ch949]   - that's what I get with Alt 238...interesting how much it changes around.

8 [ch8734] [ch8734] ï   that's my cut & paste characters...

 hmmmm :-/

Sorry, I don't have all the answers.  It depends a lot on the application you are using, the default code page of your computer... and the particular font.  It works in notepad but not wordpad.  I also discovered it doesn't appear to work in IExplorer.... but it works fine in Firefox.  On a laptop you must use the appropriate function key sequence to activate the embedded 'keypad' - each laptop is different.  On my Compaq laptop I must hold Alt and Fn and then press 236 (letters klo).  It's a crapshoot at best.

[ch8616] shows up in IE, [ch8734] shows up in Firefox.  Weird.

Minor point that no one has contributed yet: The link contains symbols for the Mac, also. (Same link, separate page)

Yeah, the Mac page is of special interest to me, being a budding graphic designer (who is still searching for a job in his field)!  ::)

balibeemer,

This is all started with my name, Aïda.  I always use the 'special character' of the umlauted i in my name and this discussion is about how to make that happen.  The link rich gave gives shortcuts for lots of different characters used, everything from the accented alphabet to mathematical, punctuation characters.

I love using this one....  [ch9835] [ch9835] [ch9835] [ch9834] [ch9834] [ch9835]  ... over and over again.  ;D

Aida,
Many thanks for the explanation. Please note that I have spelt your name 'umlautless" as I always thought that an umlaut was a plate of Norwegian reindeer moss salad!
