Fuel Prices
« on: January 02, 2008, 10:18:43 AM »
Just wondering what members on this forum are paying for fuel these days ?

Here in Phoenix, it's $2.86 US per US gallon. ( 87 octane, regular grade )

I'd like to here from members outside of the US as well.

Here in price gouge central (SF Bay Area) you won't find gas under $3/gallon.
The average here in my neck of the weeds is probably about $3.27 for regular,
and $3.45 or more for supreme.  I've seen it as high as $3.85 up here.  We're
already fully resigned to it (eventually) reaching $5/gallon here.  Why so much?
Because they can!  Supply & demand are BS.  They charge what they can based
on the economic strength of the area.  Here where a rundown outhouse sells for
a million dollars they figure we'll pay any amount for just about anything, and
they're mostly right.  It leaves those of us who aren't rich really struggling to
make ends meet.  Luckily the bikes get awesome mileage!

I never pay any attention.  My only other option would be to ride my bicycle a hundred miles a day, and while I would get plenty of exercise, I would be killed by a log truck some dark rainy morning.  12 years to retirement, hopefully.

Ballpark figure with a conversion of $1.47US per Euro, and 3.82 liters per US gallon, gives a total of $6.51US per US gallon.

At Phoenix prices, that would be about .75 Euro per litre.

Yeah, here in the US we must seem like snivelers when we're crying about
fuel costs that are often times less than half what they're paying throughout
the UK and Europe.  It's too expensive, no matter which side of the pond
you're on.  It just makes me glad the bikes get so much better mileage
than (most) cars.  Commuting turns out to be cheaper, quicker, greener,
and most importantly more fun!  I typically burn about $14/week riding the
Multistrada to work, vs. at least $60/week in my truck.  No brainer!

Don't feel too guilty about being better off than those on the other side of the pond.  The liberals almost have our gas prices in line with what they think we should be paying, just give 'em a little more time...

Quick question for the Euro-Crowd - Does the average consumer know/realize just what percentage of the fuel bill goes to line the pockets of government at various levels?  It's spelled out on the dispenser around here, seems to be an advertised 38 cents but that feels low for some reason...

Today the price here in upstate SC had climbed to $2.80/gal. for unleaded.  We've been pretty fortunate in that this area has always been among the lowest in the country, but I have a feeling my luck is about to run out!    :-/

Had to fill up the cage on the way home tonite, and $303.9 was the best I could do.
Also saw lots of $3.06 to $3.09s out there.

Thank goodness the Honda gets 38 mpg at 75 mph...

Here in the lower-middle New Hampshire it has dropped a few cents to around $2.96/gallon, though I did find one station selling it for $2.93/gallon last night.
Heading further north in NH the prices go up to around $3.05/gallon.  All these prices are for unleaded regular - premium adds about .20 to .30 per gallon.
I was in Vermont last week, and with their higher state taxes on gasoline the prices there were averaging $3.10 to $3.15/gallon for unleaded regular.
My cousin lives in Brooklyn, New York and she is paying about $3.55/gallon for unleaded regular.

I wish that we had the mass transportation infrastructure in this country that the Europeans have on the other side of the pond - THEN we wouldn't complain so much about the fuel prices over here.   With the distances involved in commuting to work, etc. my wife and I together easily spend over $100/week in gasoline, and this is with 4 cylinder autos that average between 30 and 38 MPG on the highway, and me telecommuting at least 1-2 days/week.  I ride my motorcycle whenever I can during the warm months, but at this time of year, that option is completely unthinkable.

My CRX gets as good of mileage as the R65 (near 40) and tires are way cheaper per mile.  Even though insurance is more, the car is much less expensive to drive overall.  Which didn't stop me from riding the R65 today.  Rain, rain, rain.  At least my snow has thawed so I can get the bike out without tipping over all the time.

Yesterday's $3.03 was up to $3.14 today, and that's just 87 octane Regular.
The "good stuff" is now up in the $3.20s and $3.30s... :o
