Ride your own ride.......
« on: October 23, 2007, 10:34:42 AM »
Yesterday a good friend of mine (Mike Gumbert) and I decided to go for a ride and lunch. He was on his K75 and I was riding my sportster. We were going to ride a few back-roads to enjoy the changing leaves and then go to lunch at this little roadside cafe named Rosie's. We left town on a newly paved back road (Rt 1458). About two miles down the road there is a big left hand curve with a posted 35 mph suggested limit. Going around the curve at 45 mph, what should I see on the other side but two trucks stopped in the middle of the road. The detention center (jail) had a bunch of prisoners cleaning the roadside. They were standing around all over the road with their transport truck in the road. Another guy had apparently stopped, either to bullshit or wait for the prisoners to get out of the road. With guardrails on both sides of the road it was either stop or try to go between them. With a mighty heave and the will of god I stopped with prisoners jumping in all directions. Pulling the bike as close to the right side of the road as possible to give Mike more room to maneuver. Then I heard it, that sickening sound of a bike sliding on pavement. Everything got quiet. I hoped that Mike would be on the road beside of me unhurt. No, his motorcycle was there on its side up against the truck in the left hand lane. My stomach began to churn as I realized that the only other place he could be was under the truck. Turned off the bike, put down the kickstand, and jumped over the bike to see Mike. He was lying on his back with hands in the air with upper body sticking out from under the truck. He was conscious, and I told him not to move and asked where it was hurting. His chest and shoulders were giving a lot of pain. Fortunately, a few hours later after an ambulance ride and a stay in the emergency room, x-rays showed only a cracked collar bone. Bike totaled, helmet (full coverage) scraped and banged up, protective riding pants torn and abraded, leather jacket scuffed, he is going to be real sore for a couple of weeks, all considered not a bad outcome. Always remember that something is around the next curve and ready to make you crash. Always ride your own ride boys, ride your own ride......Dew.

You just never know what's around the next turn, or over the next rise in the road ! Your friend got real lucky, something to be said about proper riding gear. Makes you wonder if our hobby is really worth the risk sometimes.

Thanks Dew.  We all know it, but I'm not sure we can be reminded often enough.  I'm glad your friend will be OK, and gladder that you were able to stop safely.

Dew -

So glad to hear that you are OK, and at least relieved that your friend is still with you, even though
injured.    We'll be sure to think of him in our prayers.  This past weekend I was almost taken out by a herd of deer crossing the road in front of
me late at night.   One has to be alert, and prepared for practically anything, at all times - especially in the autumn, for some reason..

On a side note, I CERTAINLY hope that those criminally moronic f-heads that intentionally blocked
the road in such a dangerous manner received citations and will be going to court to answer for their criminal stupidity.

My bad experience was a immigrant driver making a illegal u-turn as I crested a hill curve. Maybe we should push to have straight roads built for the cages and leave the curves to us. hope your friend recovers faster than I have.

Thanks guys, Mike is healing up nicely. He is out and driving his truck around. The insurance isn't going to pay much for his pristine 91' K75. Told him I will help find the parts on the net and help put it back together. His wife wants him to stop riding ,two accidents this year and another bad one a couple of years back. Whatever his decision, its his to make. I won't try to influence him, but regardless, will still help out with the bike.....Dew.

Good to hear he's up and about.

When I first started riding bikes in my teens my dad told me to always remember that every one else on the road will be trying to kill you... It was good advice and (touch wood) has kept in one piece. Well mostly...

Dew,
I am glad it was no worse than it was. I ache just hearing about it.
I truly believe in expecting the worse from all drivers. I have watched it only get worse over the years. I continue to experience close calls at least weekly. But I will ride as long as physically able.
I will be practicing my emergency stopping, after hearing of your experience.
