Since you say you inspected the forks did you check the alignment? See
http://w6rec.com/duane/bmw/forks.htm
for some of the best advice I have seen on forks. Stiction can cause a wobble and Duane has definite opinions about handlebar mounted shields. However, I have been riding with Wixom fairings and various shields and not had a problem. I did fit a steering damper to the R75/6 and the shield on the R65 is a smaller one. the R65 front end does feel light above 80 MPH. YMMV

Drew I did check that site and I intend to check for stiction as he suggests.  I did previously check it...but not using his method. He has lots of interesting info there.

Unfortunately (actually, FORTUNATELY) the stuff on Duane's site for fork alignment does not apply to our R65 forks.  We have a much superior set-up than the bigger bikes.  They caught up with the mono-shock models.

Gold Wings have ball bearings in their headstock???  Bizarre!  I didn't think anyone used balls anymore.
I remember replacing the ball bearings in my /2 conversion with tapered rollers.
