I have just ordered a replacement DW for our old 27 year old Maytag.  It needs a new pump shaft and bearings which are no longer available.  :(

This thread reminds me of one of my older neighbors - he is a nice enough guy, but he always seems to have terrible luck.

Last month, his clothes washer quit working, and he &his wife didn't have the cash to buy a new one at the time.  So, another neighbor (not me) gave him a used one that he had still sitting in his basement to use until a new one could be bought.  Well, the "free" washer worked for a couple weeks, and this week developed a serious leak which caused a flood in the house, ruining the floor, wallboard, etc.  that now has to be dried and out replaced.  Now, less than a week before Christmas and he has had to drag half his furniture outside, tear out a wall, carpeting, and rip up the flooring in one room of his house.    They say "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth", but I'd have to add "Never accept a gift used-appliance"!  Sometimes "Free" is alot more expensive than "New"..
Living in the "Land of Litigation" will he sue the neighbor who gave him the washing machine for damages ??
Lou

No, he won't sue his neighbor - they actually get along well (or at least, they did - who knows now)?!?  I am sure that if his insurance company finds out, that may be another story entirely..   Neither of them have much money and both semi-retired, living in a small, sleepy town.

Got back from my new year "Zorro" break and i went into my garage (its integral to the house) i noticed the freezer was off so i reset the RCCB and it started sparking and smoking.
When i read the small print in my insurance the excess was more than the value of the food and there was a clause that excludes any appliance over 10 years old double wammy but at least i had a home to come back too.

My wife, who refuses to have a dishwasher in the house because it " it never get them clean enough", laughs herself sick at this thread. The best part? I don't get them clean enough either! It's something I just have to live with...

Just a thought...I may not use the diswasher very often but while it sits there I do use it to place all the wet dishes as I wash them on its racks for drying. Just seems to be a good place to put 'em and saves taking up any counter space for one of those portable on-the-counter racks with underneath drainboard which are so much smaller.

I'm gonna quit reading this damned thread! Seems everybody that chimes in has an appliance blow out of some sort so I'm outta here.

Go read my "Vegas" post in Chit Chat. More fun, less heartache.

I installed my replacement a couple weeks ago.  The guy that delivered it looked at my dead one and commented on how old it looked.  I told him it's age and he replied, "Well, your new one ain't gonna last that long!"  I replaced it with an Amana and it appears Whirlpool pretty much makes most of the DW brands...

Because of Energy Star ratings, Dishwashers of moder manufacture are NOT nearly as good at getting your dishes clean as the old ones were..

We went thru three of the cheap ones before we got an $800.00 Bosh unit that just does ok... Cheap don't get the dishes clean...

A new saying....
