WZC problem

Calling all computer buffs.....i have a oldish laptop (dell insperon 1100) its on XP i recentley upgraded my internet connection to a Belkin notebook card which was fine for a while but im now having to restart the WZC when i turn on the computer, i reset it to automatic every time but when i restart its back on manual?? my wife uses the same computer in her name and it starts ok?? what could be the problem.My software support isnt much good as i dont speak Apache.

Here's one possibility - How are you at hacking the Registry ?

Run regedit and browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WZCSVC

Make sure the Start entry 2nd from bottom has the correct hex entry in  the data column as shown.



Just realised there is an easier way. Run msconfig and make sure the Wireless Zero configuration service is ticked. Unticking this would change the above registry entry from 2 to 4

That's a good question Lou as the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE section of the registry should be the same for every user. Never the less that start line is what ultimately controls whether the WZC service starts or not and I would still look at it to see if the data value is the same for you and your wife. If they are different then something in your logon is controlling this registry setting.

If you don't want to risk changing the registry directly there is a way to make one logon generally behave the same as another. Copy the file NTUSER.dat from the folder C:\Documents and Settings\"your wife's username" to C:\documents and settings\"your username"  Be sure to make a copy of your NTUSER.dat file first and save it somewhere else so that you can restore it if required. NTUSER.dat contains the part of the registry that is customized for each user and you will only be able to do this if the user you are copying from and the user you are copying to are not logged on. Use a 3rd different logon that has administrator rights. There will be an logon with the username of "administrator" with maybe a blank password unless someone changed it when windows was installed. Otherwise just create a new logon with administrator rights to do this.

One of my Laptops (running Windows XP still) is doing something similar - the WZC service fails to start even though it was set on automatic, and thus none of the wireless connections work until I manually restart it, set it back to automatic, etc. etc.    The next time I power up the machine, it seems to be back where it was before -> screwed up again.   It worked flawlessly until I let it install the latest XP Service pack from M$oft.

The other laptop, which doesn't have that latest SP, is still working fine.
Both are Dell pcs.

Lou, I posed your question to the lovely Mrs. Phorqs who is an IT Director of considerable capability.  She replied as follows....

The patch probably requires that he be logged in as Administrator and not just as himself to update his registry.  The OS used to assume that the logged in person was the Administrator in most cases for a personal PC.  But because some malware can exploit this ‘feature’ when you are cruising around on the net, you now have to go into your system settings and click on Administrator when you want to perform administrator functions.  Easy enough to do…they just don’t bother telling anyone that they have just made your system more quirky.
If she were sitting there with you she'd probably say, "OK Bonehead, move over", make a few bold key strokes, and voila! you'd be in bidness!  Good luck!! 8-)

Mrs. Phorqs is the IT Director of bowl.com.  Her team supports the back end of the website for the US Bowling Congress.  I have no idea if it's a mainframe, a loop frame, a tonti frame, a plunger, or even a hard tail.  I am known as Bonehead when it comes to computers and IT related subjects.  On the other hand, I do fairly well keeping her R1100R fit and running smoothly.  It's a symbiotic relationship that seems to work well for us. Right heres what happened...I did a reset point from before the problem started which cured it untill i started the computer with the modem switched off. Hey ho problem back did another reset problem solved.
Presumably if i start up out of range of wifi it will recur ??
