Old Member Hello

Hi Guys and Gals,

Sorry I've been off cavorting with the Britbikers on Britbike.com.  Still have the R65.  It's in the company parking lot as I type and I needs to go rescue it.  It has post 81 rear wheels and diff now.  But I am still running around on the original gear box and spline at 132,000 miles.  Of course it is the best handling R65 in the world courtesy of the 1988 K100RS front end and wheel.

Every now and then I feel the need to sell the thing (when I do the spline lube) and then I go ride and all is forgiven.  8-)

Regards,

Gumby

Glad to see you back, Rip Van Gumby!  Don't stay gone so long next time or you might get caught in one of "Hangin' Judge Bob's" infamous purges...  :o

Ah! The very thing I am in the process of gearing up to do. I have the K100RS front end, perhaps you could clear up a couple of concerns I have.

Steering lock - is it adequate? Did you have to relieve the lock stops on either the frame or triple clamps, and if so, how much?

Did you use the stock K100 bar mounts?

The task I have been putting off is making up the little brackets to allow me to  use the original instrument/headlight/blinker mount - I really should crack on with this as I am due a front tyre and the K100 rim will allow me to run 4:00x18 front and rear (I assume that you do this?)

Hi Semper! I'm not on much these days either. Glad they were able to round you and I up to revisit the old gang. ;-)

Ha! This is the way I feel about my Laverda! Although I really am trying to sell it this time... I will never think about selling my R65, though.

Hi Tony

Steering Lock.  I thought I welded a block on the front of the head stock to make the steer lock stronger and a bit wider.  Its been so long I will have to look.

Seems to me the instrument mounting frame Bolts into the K100RS front end but the bottom is zip-tied to the forks.

I have the Michelin Pilot Activ 100/90H18 on the front and the 4.00 H18 on the back.  Too mee this is a perfect set up.   If Michelin ever quits making this tire I will weep buckets.  I think a 4.00 would be overkill but perhaps it would cure... (see next)

Handling in corners - the bike wants to turn into the corner so you will find yourself counter steering (bottom hand pressing forward) but after a short while you do not notice anymoar!  Bike is stable with my draggy Lufty fairing and three Givi bags out to 90 mph!  I cannot help myself pushing this monster around the North Georja Mountains hanging off the bike with a knee down.  I'm sure I look like hell on wheels but I couldn't give a rats ass at this point.  Perhaps I can go up to The Tail of The Dragon and the Killboy will snap my pic.  If he does Ill post it up here so you can all have a laugh!  ;D

The K100RS has the vibration rubber dampening mounts which is not necessary on my smooth as freekin silk R65.
I hear there are some solid mounts to replace the rubber but I have not found them yet.

My forks are the Sport forks as they have an "S" stamped on the tops.  Just the luck of the deal.

Also the forks are taller.  Luckily the R100 centerstand and R100 Brown side stand will fit the R65 bits.  Getting the entire front end off ebay for $400 dollars was the best bit of ebaying I have ever done!  (ever)

Good luck Tony.

Oh crap!!  How could I ever have forgotten that!  But, in my defense I was going through a box a few days ago and found a couple patches Melena sent me which made me wonder how she was doing.

I'm embarrassed - but, I'm getting old so I have an excuse!

If it wasn't for the "old" excuse I wouldn't make it through the day. It doesn't hurt that "old" still equates to " knows the secrets to the kingdom" in some plaves.  ;D
Keep your bike in good repair: motorcycle boots are not comfortable for walking.
