Guilty as charged.
The very first game I ever played on a computer was an artillery game on an Osborne 01.
Shortly after I built my own S100 system which hung around for years eventually growing a pair of 8" single sided, single density (and therefore 90 KILOBYTES in capacity). OS wise it went from a proprietary (and all but useless except for hardware testing) to CP/M and ultimately MSDOS (shortly after which its lack of IBMPC compatibility meant my interest waned) - but CP/M meannt that for the very first time I could buy off the shelf software and the first one I bought was Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, a text based game with zero graphics.
Game consoles followed and of course led to the comment that triggered your interest and unmasked me.
The only game I play these days is hearts. I tried to get interested in the Sim life stuff a decade back, but there are roads to be ridden, sunsets to watch, friends to spend time with etc which kind of means that the time needed to be spent in front of a screen simply is not available to me, even if I was interested.
Sometimes stuff happens that triggers memory. Last year there was a Docco on the rise and fall of the non-realtime packet switched network known ad FidoNet (or Fightonet to anyone involved). I was saddened by the impact that the schism in Fido had on some people and further saddened to see that they still carry the cudgels to this very day. i have to admit that it all seemed very important at the time, but with the perspective of distance not so much these days.
The other thing that triggered a memory recently was an abortive US tv series called "Halt and Catch Fire". Pity it didn't last more than a few episodes, I suspect that whilst it had me and probably a few others of my vintage absolutely enthralled, the back story was simply too complex and too remote fro modern viewers.
I was thinking of adopting "PUSH. HCF" as a sig, but who would get it.....
