Newbie here under false pretences
« on: June 18, 2013, 03:06:15 AM »
Hi Guys,
new to this forum and I'll have to confess that I haven't got an R65 anymore but got an R80 last year. I bought an R65 monolever in 1986
and had it for a few years but the gearbox karked - the missing spacer/washer thing that afflicted the early 65s.
I have a particularly good roadtest of the monolever 65 if anyone is interested

OK, werewasi, here's a welcome to you... "under false pretenses". ;D

R80s are way cool bikes with many similarities to our R65s so join us in the asylum. Post up a snap of your '80' when you can.

What a brief honeymoon before our differences surfaced.

Pretence vs. pretense

Pretence and pretense are different spellings of the same word. Pretense is preferred in American English, while pretence is the preferred spelling in most other varieties of English, including British and Australian English. Canadian English generally favors pretence over pretense, but the latter appears about a third of the time.

(The Grammastist.com)

but I can understand your preference since doen't this sound more poetic

Judith Tannenbaum who wrote "Disguised as a Poem," said that she vows "to give up willful pretense, and to live an unmasked life of surrender"....

- now about these bits I've got left over when I put my gearbox back together...............

Welcome aboard werewasi - we welcome  many folks here who don't currently have an R65 - we don't discriminate against other bikes as many of use also own other brands and models as well.  Though certainly, the R65 has a special place of honor here.

The infamous "missing circlip" issue affected many of the airheads of all displacements between 1986 and 1991, I believe.   I've known several owners of R80 and R100RTs who suffered the same expensive problem and a subsequent transmission rebuild because of it.  The last year or two of the airhead production they did seem to get things right again.

Post up pics of your bike when you can!   We continue on in the tradition of several countries, divided by a common language...

Much like that lost Indian tribe, the Fugowie.

Old Chief always saying, Wer da Fugowie?"

Don't know if the Lost Tribe of the Fugowies ever did become un-lost.

However, I do have the Chief's Fugowie War Club in my shop...

Looks like a ceremonial artifact. At any rate, I'm guessing he gave it to you just before joining his lost tribe.

Amazing coincidence !!!
Yes, I am werewasi, youngest son of the chief of the Fugowies and we have been trying to trace our ancestral heritage and origins for a long time.  I now know that we must have migrated from the US but it would have been a pretty wet trip in war canoes.
Wonder if I am entitled to a green card.

I already have links to you after visiting the US in 2010, (the Big Bike Ride) I was appointed Plenipotentiary and Honary Australian Cultural Ambassador to the town of Truth or Consequences New Mexico 7289.
It's not a thing I brag about when in US forums/circles since some people react badly to the idea that the lack of culture needs to be remedied by importing the Australian excess

 ;D ;D ;D

This is a family photo - I'm in the middle on Mammas knee.
It gets quite cold at night in the middle of AUS - that's why everyone has got their woolies on.

Montmil, you said ”Old Chief always saying, Wer da Fugowie”
Not surprising  – he’s looking for us, his lost brothers.
Is he still around ?

I may not fit in just fine because coming to this forum may have been a big mistake with the issues that now arise

If the US brothers are all gone, then we will be claiming through UNESCO the war club you are holding.
Hopefully it won’t become a bigger issue than the return of the Elgin Marbles to Greece.

I dunno, Werewasi... might take awhile. ::)

Despite requests from the Mexican government, the wooden leg worn by the defeated President of Mexico General Antonio López de Santa Anna during the Battle of San Jacinto in April of 1836 is still here in the US of A.

Dang! A tribal migration via war canoes across the Pacific to Australia reduces Kon-Tiki to a splash in the park duck pond!

Ever thought of re-creating the journey?

Remember the privations of the Runaway Scrape too.
Yes history influences us all but when Hitler annexed Australia in 1938 by way of the Anschluss and made it a condition that only German motorcycles be imported we didn't begrudge it.
After the Battle of Brisbane in 1942, we made peace with you.

der fugowie, he very peaceful man
 :D :D :D

now to get back to bikes---
