How Much Should Gasoline Cost?
« on: March 31, 2012, 05:33:08 PM »
Seems there are many people of late unhappy with the current cost of energy.  I would like to know how much most people think a gallon of gasoline should cost.  Or if you prefer, the price per liter.  Further, what needs to happen, in your opinion, to reach that price and maintain it?

I'm not sure what it "should" cost - but I do know that futures speculation on wall street, emotional panic reactions to oil prices and disharmony in the middle east, all seem to rasie the price of gasoline in our fuel stations immediately, despite the fact that -
1.  The USofA imports less oil from the middle east now than it has in the past few decades.
2.  The gasoline we have today came from crude oil that came out of the ground more than 2 months prior.
3.  Like lawyers, the big petroleum companies always seem to be making money, and in ever increasing amounts of profit.   They cannot possibly need the government subsidies they presently receive, and they made incredible profits when ever other industry was flagging/failing through this recent recession.
They will continue to raise prices to maximize their own profits until we start seriously moving away from gas.   The USofA is now exporting gasoline to South America and Asia because the US market has shrunk to pre-2008 usage levels.  It is now our biggest (dollar-wise) national export.

Hey nhMike,

You're responding to a member of the Big Oil Industry so Bengt may not want you to tip over his rice bowl. ;D

What should gas cost? Back in the day, I recall riding to the neighborhood Texaco station with my mother and getting tanked at $0.25 per gallon. That sounds good to me.

How to get there? I'm up for driving the DeLoren in Back to the Future.

Should anyone know the real answer, you're wasting your time on this forum. [smiley=beehive.gif]

think a gallon of gasoline should cost

When I had my first car and was working at the market after school a loaf of bread and a gallon of gas were about a $0.25.  now 50+ years later,  both are about $4.00.

Beer seems to be a bargain now days. Coors was $1.20 a 6-pack then and now only $7.00 for a much lower price hike than gas or bread.

I just wish we were making the profit on the fuel by drilling our own rather than giving all the money to the Middle East.

I have mixed feelings about the price per barrel as when it gets too low drilling slows down and puts my miserable job at risk.  But I do feel that we should develop and drill all we can (safely) on our own soil to minimize the amount we have to import from people that really don't like us very much...

I , too, remember sub 30 cent per gallon gas but then remember how much I was making at the time.  Another thing a lot of folks don't realize is that for the most part oil is traded in Dollars so when the Dollars goes down in value the price of crude goes up.  If our current administration keeps printing money like there is no tomorrow, well, there may not be a tomorrow!

Nope, not at all.  I pay the same price as everyone else.  It's true that I had Monte scratching his head a while back when I told him that one of the perks of my company was a discount on gasoline based on the years of service.  15 years = 15% discount etc.  (For a while there he took the cork to the bottom but eventually twigged that I was messing with him.)

I'm really curious what the consumers think it should cost.  For most of us motorcycles are a recreational vehicle and we're willing to pay whatever, not that we necessarily like it.

Big oil gets tax breaks-do you? I don't know about the rest of R65 people, but I am retired with social security and a small pension. I do not make over $250,000.00 a year. These people also get tax breaks and pay a lower percentage than middle class working people.
The first time I went to Canada, thought it was wonderful gas was less than $.50 a gallon until I topped off the R65 for about $10.00 and realized they sell by the liter. At the time I was happy, the US did not have $2.00 gas.
My income increased over the years, but I gained more skills and produced more technical work. When as a young person, I cut grass for $.75 an hour-about three gallons of gas. Today that would be $12.00 and hour. I don't cut grass for a living any more. Actually, I don't do anything for a living anymore. When I last held a public job, I made more than $12.00 an hour, so my income exceeded gas price increases, but again, I had skills to do more than cut grass.
Banks are being forced to give decreased interest rates for those home buyers having difficulty with payments. Why not make the same requirement of oil companies? I can already hear the screaming from a certain political group.
If I want to play, I will pay. Seriously, gas prices have made a major impact on plans for a summer trip. I once traveled for about $25.00 per day by myself and only a little more with my daughter. My wife and I looked at pricing for a summer trip and even with a lot less miles per day, we are looking at $150.00 per day. Make a 60 day trip, taking time to ride two lanes and see sights and a $9,000.00 vacation is reality. For the first time, in my life, there is not a clock ticking from the time I leave home until I return. There is no job to return to Sunday night at 2300 or Monday at 0700. Now, however, the money is not there for this trip.
Enough of this rambling, I hope we are able to make at least a short trip before the weather gets hot.

Whatever the vendor can sell it for is the simple answer..here we pay fuel duty and that duty is also subject to VAT..????? thats a tax on tax???? what we pay at the pump is 80% tax.... tea party coming???
My first job was for BP where i trained as a Marine Engineer the level of waste within the industry was incredible, i now have a few oil stocks so i follow whats going on and none of it makes much sense, when you expect a SP boost usually its the opposite, a couple of weeks back BP were granted licences for new wells with significant reserves the share price promptly fell 10% ??? that said the dividends are good far more than bank interest.
The South Atlantic is an interesting investment area with several companies holding proven reserves which has caused the Argentine government to start whining about the Falklands again, i have shares in one which i hope will pay for my planned US trip if it comes good but until the Argies shut up there will be no progress.
Same in West Africa... why is the oil under unstable regimes?? oh Libya is back one line big time, if it kicks off with Iran these other areas will be stratospheric investments.
With all the uncertainty the price of gas is only going one way.....up.

I have friend that I went to grade and high school with, he went into geology and went to work for AMOCO .

Pretty much lost touch with him since mid '80's .

Got a call from him about 6 weeks ago or so, his parents retired and moved to Las Vegas 16 years, his father was killed on his Gold Wing about 7 years ago, hit by an impaired driver, his mother passed away 8 weeks ago .

He was going through her personal effects and found my phone number .

So, we got caught up on life, I asked him in his opinion what oil would cost if you took the speculation cost out of it .

His reply was $35-40US per barrel .

Gas/petrol should be in the $1.75-2.00US before taxes,etc.....

He does consulting work now that he is retired (at 51!!!) his main work now is with shale and oil sands in Canada .

It's estimated that there is more oil in Canada, than there ever was in Saudi Arabia, it's just that the cost is prohibitive right now with current technology .

There's a lot of oil out there, question is what are you willing to pay for it !!!!!

I have friends and customers who have been in the oil business their entire lives...

Gas "could" be about .75 a gallon.. If we got rid of the speculation. And way over abundant taxes...

But them rich oil men have to make their friggin ridiculous profits..
And the friggin government has to tax even more than that...

Friggin, Friggin, I wanna slap them all...

If I were selling it I would charge all that the market would bear.  I think it could go quite a bit higher (like in Europe, for example) and people would still buy it.  It would certainly motivate me to ride my bicycle even more than I do now (40 bucks in the pickup gas tank yesterday....).
