The R65 is finally done
« on: September 08, 2007, 04:15:15 PM »
;D I do believe I have just finished the R65.  Here are 2 final pictures of the completed bike.
The Krauser bags are for a larger bike, but fabricating new bottom brackets out of aluminum bar stock was not to difficult.  This is my daily ride to work now, and after about 2000 miles without any trouble my confidence in the roadworthyness grows and grows.  I won't bore you with anymore pictures, unless asked.
BTW--this forum has been a great help with technical knowledge, I thank everyone that posted advise.
Thanks for looking,

Yum.

As far as I know, the bags are the same for any year, just the brackets are specific to R65.

Especially your home made ones.   :)

What did you use for your knee pads on the gas tank?  I need something like that.

Nice bike, by the way.

The knee pads were ordered out ofthe J & P cycle catalog.  I'm not really thrilled with the shape, but they do work to protect the clear coat from my riding pants.  I may change them to real BMW pads if I find that they are a better shape and fit.

Thanks,
Mike

Kewl!  Those knee pads really add a touch of nostalgic class to the bike, like a '60s Triumph!  You have a "one of a kind" Beemer, my friend!

Well done, Mike!  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

I really like the detail done to the side covers! Those knee pads do evoke Triumph tank shape, I do beleive there were some more box shaped ones used on older orient bikes. Is that an auxillary light on the crash bar? Tell us some more. Looks the proper motorcycle!

Rich,
They are LED running lights.  They use very little power, but give off an intense light.  I found them on Ebay.
for about 40 bucks, less the brackets that I had hanging around from an old Harley.

Thats a great looking bike, Mike, especially the two-tone paint job.  Super clean!

Your last pic of the running lights as some weird reflections on the exhaust pipes - pattern of black dashes  What is that??

They look like heat shields for the header pipes.

They are heat shields that came with the bike.  That appear to work well.  The bike has 47,000 miles on it and the header pipes have not turned color at all.  I think the heat shields dissipate the heat well enough to keep the pipes cool.  Anyone else experience this effect?

Seems a lot of folks call them "heat-shields".  I remember getting a pair of these in 1978 with a new R100/7 I bought and the dealer said they were actually stone-guards.  Keeps gravel and other FOD from dinging up the front of your head-pipes...

I think those *Heatshields* are a Luftmeister product.  Nice paint job.  Cool looking bike!!!  Are you gong to put a topcase on your Reynolds?  If you do I strongly reccomend a Givi with the Brake light built in.  Can't have too many brake lights.  (e460 or E52)
