BMW S1000RR in Cycle World e-update
« on: December 04, 2009, 07:27:54 PM »
Check it out. Quick test ride and some more photos of the new S1000RR.

Here's a plug for a low priced two-year subscription to Cycle World http://cycleworld.com. Although the newsstand issue has an offer for $18.00 USD, the CW web site cuts two bucks off the two-year price at $16.00 USD is the real deal.

You can also get the CW email newsletter.

I'll buy CW once in a while if I see something particularly interesting on the cover at the newstand/shop, but I haven't subscribed to them in quite a few years.   Way tooo many adverts and at the time, way too much emphasis on crotch rocket bikes.    Now, I enjoy a spirited bike as much as anyone, but I get tired/bored with a constant barrage of pseudo-racer bikes that have way too much ability for most people to safely handle, and writers who appear to be so jaded, "Oh this bike is such a slow pig and could only turn the 1/4mile in 10.85 seconds compared to brand Y  which would do it so much faster in 10.72 seconds."   You get the idea.    Though it is expensive, I do like the Motorcycle Classics magazine I subscribe to.

With the exit/firing of CW's Senior Editor Dave Edwards, after his 20+ years at the helm, Cycle World is already changing dramatically.
Edwards was at this year's Norton Owners Rally in Texas this past October; out of a job since September. The 90-day lag time in magazine publication production is why you saw his editorials until the latest CW issue along with the "print delay" Indy MotoGP report and CW test of the new HD Wide Glide. They liked it, the Harley

As to advertisers, Mike, they pay the freight in the publishing business; hence the $0.66 per issue CW subscriber price versus the pricey Moto'Classics. Exposure costs money... just ask Tiger Woods.
On the other end of the advert spectrum is the slick, road trippin', regional Ride Texas Magazine. The recession has heavily impacted their advertisers finances in a very negative way. They have had to cut their publication to only four-times/year and reduced its physical size. I'd be surprised if they survive another year. Sad.

I like most all facets of motorcycling so I read a variety of pubs including The Classic Motorcycle. I also enjoy the Wall Street Journal. Their years ago survey reports on H-D lead me to sell my Milwaukee investments years ago before the Baby Boomers quit buying the product.

Dave Edwards is gone?  He was at the LOP Norton rally?  Monte, you were holding out on me!  He'll sorely be missed by us old guys.  I just finished reading Peter Egan's "Leanings" and "Leanings 2".  Great stuff.  I guess Egan's going to spool it up one of these days, too.  While I can relate to his writing very well I doubt that the "old timers" would appeal to the squids out there whose only exposure to motorcycling is the crotch rockets.

Interestingly enough, I picked up a book, "The Cafe Racer" and the author compares todays squid to the Rockers of old.  Not sure if I buy that argument completely but it is something to think about.

Anyhow, thanks for the link to the S1000RR.
