NY Times Article About Boxers
« on: July 06, 2009, 10:09:42 PM »
In case you missed it, the July 2 edition of the NY Times has an article about BMW's off again-on again commitment to the Boxer design. The article showcases a guy who owns both a 1959 R50 (restored) and a shiny new HP2. Fun reading!

Try this link (you might have to copy & paste, for my browser has been in a snit recently):

of go to www.nytimes.com and check under "automotive" headlines.

I love the fact that people are still discovering this stuff "languishing in a Pennsylvania barn".     I'm thinking that a year or so spent as a garage door installer would probably be time very well spent for a collector or enthusiast of almost any stripe.  Think of the daily opportunites you'd have for the "any interest in selling that old thing under the tarp back there?".    Better than panning for nuggets through Craigslist I'd say.

I recall about 2 years ago a Craiglist ad for an R27 which the daughter was selling after her fathers death. Running bike in very nice condition per the pic. He rode it around Petosky, Michigan right up till his death.  I recall the asking price was $2,700/OBO (obviously the daughter did not know the value of this bmw). Saw the ad right after it was posted - called and left a message trying to buy it that night. Had heard about guys stumbling on to these kind of deals - thought I had finally found mine.

Well apparently she had about a hundred phone messages when she returned home after work and began researching the value of the bike. Also, it was Dover White (only a handfull imported to US). The ad was revised the next day - she apologized for the confusion because she did not know the value of the bike and indicated if interested phone or email your offer.

I bowed out at that point - bet it sold for a bundle.
