How long have you had the bike?

I'm also new, well I'm a lot older than my bike. Was born when they put up the Berlin wall, but I'm still here!

I've just acquired a 1984 R65 for a bargain price of about $900.00. It seems to run fine apart from high idling and needs new tyres and the side and main stands are rather dodgy. Its going for a service at a local airhead specialist next week and I've orderd a side stand. Next I'll start work on the little things lock sorting out locks on the panniers.

I bought it unseen and rode it back from ner Durban to Johannesburg, about 300 miles, got a puncture in the front, but apart from that it was uneventful and I got about 45mpg (imperial).

At that price I figure its worth spending a bit of toime and money on it.

Welcome aboard gentlemen. To second Justin's question, finn - how long have you had the bike? And...how do you feel about herpes - it seems open to (mis)interpretation....(ie you like disco?)

Dang steve, $900? I think I must be the only person who hasn't managed to snag a bargain - and a nice looker to boot as well.

By the way - what are the mufflers?

Steve - unfortunately the original side stand is almost worthless. An aftermarket like the Brown stand is much more substantial and reaches further to the side which helps on uneven ground.  At $900 you really got a good deal - ride it like you stole it comes to mind!

I have had the bike for 6 months.  The PO had the bike sitting outside and  had not ridden it in a few years .. He told me the bike was for parts.

I have got it up and running now but I also have the high idle problem. When I start the bike cold it idles pretty good but after riding and getting hot the idle climbs up to about 3000 rpm ...

I guess a carb teardown must be next on my to do

Before you tear into those carbs try making adjustments for balance / idle / mixture with the bike really well warmed up, like after a 10 mile ride. High idle is a common problem with the Bings and one of the more common causes is making "cold" adjustments.

I have heard of Ray Muller and my bike is going there on Tuesday. He's got aftermarket side stands and will service it and set up for JHB altitude.

Then I'll take care of all the basic stuff from there. I have ordered a Haynes workshop manual fro Motorbooks. Simon Fourie (Bike SA) says he's good, but not cheap. Labour is R400.00 - had my Nissan Sani V6 serviced yesterday @ R295.00 per hour. I'll let you know....

5 x sump/filler plugs                                  R    25.50

WOW! You really stole that scooter!  Thanks for the picture.

You know, the factory manuals are still available.  Not perfect, but a great deal of help.  Better in many cases than the aftermarket manuals that try to deal with the various BMW models for a number of years.

I visited Ray a while ago when I bought a second hand camshaft, lifter and camshaft cover gasket there. As mentioned, they are not cheap - but still much better than the official dealerships. They have never worked on my bike though.

I must say, I'm a but surprized about the filter prices . About a year ago the local price at an official dealer was about R96.00. They only had two in stock, and fortunately I bought both.....

An old local guy used to make up air filters for many local airhead owners in the past - and he usually sold the filters for about R50.00 each. I am not sure if the guy is still alive, and what car filters he used - but he only cut it shorter, and glued the one rubber seal in place again. The width of the filters were exactly the same as the width original Bmw filters, and worked perfectly. I do not think it will be too difficult to do the filter modification........obviously one just has to find a filter which could be modified.
