r65 original equipment mufflers
« on: September 30, 2008, 06:34:14 PM »
Hi, I'm new to this forum so bear with me.

I recently bought a set of EPCO stainless steel mufflers. Beautiful workmanship and fit, but too loud for my taste. I would like to get OEM mufflers, but a dealer told me that BMW is out of lefts and will not be making more. I am checking into the reliability of this info, but in the meantime, does anyone have a source for OEM r65 pipes? Or how about a method of quieting down my EPCOs.

I would scour the on line sources for BMW parts. Chicago BMW, A&S, Hammersley BMW, Bob's, by calling 'em. Maybe even check with some of the Air Head guys who run active business like Ted or Tom. I can link you to any. Others will chime in with parts places I've omitted. EMGO.com has replacement pipes as does Motobins in the U.K. but alas, I have no practical experience with them as far as silencers.

Thanks Rich. The resonance seems to be the problem. I've tried stuffing stainless scouring poads up the outlet also reducing temporarily the outlet diameter. No significant luck.

The cheapest source for OEM mufflers I've run across is BikeBandit.com.  I've never dealt with them but their muffs are significantly less than the other online parts sources.  Still not cheap.  MAC mufflers seem to be the least expensive replacements out there, but I've read that they are louder than the OEMs.  Capital Cycle sells Sito mufflers instead of the overly expensive BMWs, but I don't know how they stack up in the noise supression department.

I'd be interested to know how your project to quiet bike goes.  I'd like mine to be less noisy than it is now, but the mufflers have to take a back seat to shutting up the clanging in the heads.

Good luck with it!

John

I have dealt with BikeBandit once, for a brake rotor.

All went well with the deal.

There seems to be no shortage of aftermarket silencers out there the question now turns to who's runnin' 'em and how silent are they? Might consider a set of Uber quiet pipes for a project stash.

I have an R65 and an R100 with the MAC mufflers and can verify they are considerably "throatier" than the stockers.  They aren't obnoxious, just right.  In my younger more rebellious days I would have considered them too quiet!  ;D

I was fortunate enough to steal a nearly brand new set of OEM's off of eBay several weeks ago.

My bike does not sound any quieter...

Not worth the $330, but considering the alternative...

NO, they are NOT for sale!

I am hoping new header pipes will help the noise.  :-/

My EPCO dealer sez to run the pipes 500-1000 miles and they will be quieter due to carbon deposits etc. Trouble with that is once I have 100 plus miles on those suckers, I figure they are not returnable. I'm going to call EPCO tomorrow and see if, for a price, threy will open mine up and modify to quiet them down a bit. EPCOs are very well made and fit perfectly, just a tad too loud a resonance for me. I'll keep you posted.

I've never heard of carbon deposits quieting mufflers before...

Does "customer service" strike a little too close to "hell desk" to let you be comfortable, Justin?  ;)

I've always wondered why they made the aftermarkets louder than stock.  An implied increase in performance?   ::)

Rob, did the new mufflers you installed replace the originals from '79?  I'm wondering if the ones on my'82 are original, cause they still look pretty good.  The headers, not so much.

Yes, I still had the originals on at this point.  And they are still in good shape, if comparing the sound to the new ones is valid.

sorry, my originals are not for sale at this time, either.
