Another newbie...
« on: January 15, 2008, 07:27:45 PM »
Hi. My name is John and I'm additi,, er, sorry, wrong group. I own a 1984 R65. I live in Globe, AZ. A small mining town 125 miles east of Phoenix. Surrounded by some of AZ's best twisties. The R65 seemed like the ideal machine for the canyons, small town roads and the odd trip to the big city. So far I could not be more pleased with the bike. Look foward to lots of meaningless on line babble.

Welcome to the asylum, nobody here is quite right in the head, can't be, to lust after 25 ish year old motorcycles  that nobody has ever heard of before !!

You've got some great roads out there in the Globe area.

More picturesque area than the Phoenix metro area !!

If by chance you are ever in Globe, Arizona, there is a restaurant/brewpub called Kelly's Broad Street Brewery, if you're hungry, or better yet stop for the night, quite a unique place.

It's an old J. C. Penney, department store three storeis tall, when it was actually a catalog store,( anyone remember them ! ), you went through the catalog, placed your order there, and in a few weeks your merchandise would be shipped there for you to pick up.

An aerospace engineer from Honeywell in Phoenix, got fed up with corporate life, took most of her liquid assets and bought the abandoned building and remodeled it into the restaurant/brewery establishment it is today.

Welcome aboard John.  When can we see some pictures of the R65?
Which reminds me that I need to take pictures with my new digital camera as soon as I get my caliper rebuilt & get the bike out of my garage.
Hey, By the way, it's snowing in Georgia!

John,
Nice to have ya sign on! I'm over here sandwiched between the Gila river Indian land and South Mountain. Love riding out your way! Wondering if you've ever traversed the road between Kearney and Florence [Florence-kelvin Highway] I'd rather have a GS model to do it but if ya want to attempt it on your '84 I'm game. Lets meet up in superior some time and cruse by the Ray mine at least. Maybe we can convince Bob R. [a confirmed solo rider I recall from past posts] to join in to make it a trio. Could be a good photo op!!

Hey guys. O.K. then, in no paticular order. I picked up my 84 as a "been sitting" special 3 mos. ago. Rebuilt carbs, new tires and a complete service, new battery and away I go. The R65 seems a good choice for the old, crumbly, off camber and generaly "vintage"  roads hereabout. Kelly's is a neat place, actually less than 300 yards from my home. Globe and the surrounding area is a riders dream with endless almost empty hiways heading in every direction. The small towns, Lake Roosevelt and some nice people. After 40 years in the valley, the valley soooo low, almost like a dream of a place. My wife and I live in a 100 year old house that I should be done restoring.... someday. As for pics, well, I will get some up... er.. soon.
As for rides, I am always up for a spin, not to sure of offroading, but a little dirt can't hurt. I hope. I should mention, because no one else will, that I am a MASTER BBQ'er, and my wife and I love parties. I was thinking of try a little run, say the middle of summer when the air in Phx can cook anything, to invite the Airheads up for some burgers and a run round the lake. Anyone interested?

I'd be more than happy to attend, but my work schedule for the most part doesn't allow me the opportunity.

Just for informational purposes, I work for Southwest Airlines in the aircraft maintenance department, and it is a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week, 52 week a year operation, we never close ( September 11, 2001 and a few days afterward, were the exception). I work weekends and holidays and an 'average' work day is 17 hours (6 am to 11pm) , my 'weekend' is Tuesday/ Wednesday/Thursday, when I do get a weekend.

So if it is on one of my days off, count me in.

Ah man, you work too hard. And too much. Just trying to make the rest of us look bad. I can live with that.
I have the "joys" of being self employed. If you get a chance, even on your tight schedule, let me know. The great thing about the mid week is an amazing lack of traffic up here.

Being a senior man on the job I have more days off than I know what to do with. I'd gladly do a midweek meet as long as it involved grilled meat products!
