Miles per year?
« on: December 31, 2007, 01:42:22 PM »
Just wondering who out there piles on the most miles every year?
I'm pretty lucky here in Northern California where the weather doesn't
get too bad, though it was 31 degrees and icy on the way to work this
morning.  I try to ride to work every day, rain or shine.  Heated grips
are unbelievably great.  My daily commuter is a Ducati Multistrada
1000S with a full compliment of bags, heated grips, taller windshield,
gel seat, and of course the Ohlins suspension that words just don't
do justice.  I only missed four days in the saddle last year, but this
year's starting off bad as I just had hip surgery two weeks ago and
both doc and girlfriend are telling me it's six weeks off the bike if I
want to heal correctly.  GRRRRR!   Itchin' to ride doesn't begin to
cover it.

Well, I know it's not me !!

I'll have to find the mileage that I wrote down for all of my vehicles last Dec. 31st.

The R1150 on average gets 6000 miles a year, the R65 at best 3000 miles a year.

That's pretty pathetic, as I live in Phoenix and can ride all year round.

I only drove to work 5 times this year, and that was about 2-3 weeks ago when we had an unusual amount of rainy weather.

Not complaining about rain mind you, up to that point in time, we had only gotten 2.4 inches of rain all year.

Geeze, Bob, we had the 5th wettest year on record, just a tad over 50 inches!  I think our drought is officially over.  :P

I put on between 7 and 8 thousand miles per year split between a couple of bikes.  The '81 nekkid R100 gets the majority of them...

Even as a daily rider, I doubt I'm the record setter in this crowd.
Unfortunately my commute is too short.  Betcha don't hear that
complaint too often!  Still I manage to put on 10k/yr on average
so I guess that isn't too bad.  If I could ride to the races instead
of drive the truck/toyhauler combo I could probably tack on another
two or three thousand easily.  Clearly the answer is more weekend
trips!  I suspect the R65LS will come in handy here.   ;)

Well I found the mileage from Dec 31, 2006, and it's worse than I thought !

R1150R : 4340 miles.

R65 :  352 miles !

Honda CRX : 4135 miles. If you subtract the 1600 miles for 2 round trips to San Diego for my transmission overhaul, it's only 2535 miles.

Trans Am : 29 miles.

Z-3 : 127 miles.

Total fuel consumption for all vehicles : 279 US gallons.

Total fuel cost for the year : $715 US.

My bike .... ...is almost a daily rider......except it rained all summer..then got cold....and I mostly just ride it around town, the grocery store, library, post office. So I really don’t tack on many miles..... think I put on 1300 this year. However I sold the R27...so mileage should pick up next year.

Well I sure don't compete for the most miles.  My 1987 R65 finally arrived a few weeks ago.
I rode a R25 all over Germany in the 1962-65 time period.  A 1970 Honda 450 Scrambler around the South East & to Mexico back in the early 70's.  Married, kids, no toys for decades.
Now I've changed the oils, filters. plugs, dropped the pan to check the strainer, & have tires, brakes & other stuff on order.  Still have to torque the heads, adjust valves, lube the trans spline, change the brake fluid and whatever "seems like a good idea".  Managed to put 115 miles on it.  Mostly trying to find a missing Georgia BMW member's son who has wandered off.  My first miles on two wheels since the 70's.  I'll add more in 2008.
Great to be back on a Beemer!  Have an outstanding New Year.

These threads are an R65.org tradition.

'81 R65:  6,800 miles in 2007  54,900 miles total.  It was a tough year, as I ended up breaking down twice, first (12/31 2006, actually) when my tranny failed, then later when my clutch failed.  A very expensive year for my R65.

'70 Bonneville:  4,100 miles in 2007, up to 89,300 total.  I had hoped to surpass 90,000 but it got cold and I found myself cowering in the shelter of my Windjammer.   :D

'89 CRX:  13,408 miles in 2007, up to 235,001 total.

'58 Chevy half ton pickup:  under a thousand in 2007.  No problems, I just don't haul that much stuff, and 17 miles per gallon, while not too bad for a pickup, is less than half what my other 3 vehicles get.

Anyway, 10,900 miles on my bikes last year, maybe 24,308 total for my commute.  No, I'm not going to move closer to work!   ;D

mxwinky, you started the thread but didn't say what your mileage was!

I thought I would put more mileage on Britta than I actually did, since I went to school all year, spring, summer and fall semesters, 32 mile trip each way from home, and with no other vehicle to use (unless my wife was home and I could take her car).  However, I only got 7,904 miles on it was of New Year's Day.  But then again, I was only going to school 2 or 3 days a week.  And Britta was also laid up for repairs for about a month during the year as well.  I thought I'd crack the 10k mark, but guess not.
Oh well, maybe THIS year!  ;)

Oops, I did forget to mention my own miles didn't I?  I've got to take a moment to
figure that one out . . . I know I put almost 10k on my '06 Harley Street Glide before
I sold it in July.  I think I've put another 3k on the Multistrada since then.  The 900SS
has been relegated to a lower spot on the rung because the 'strada is so fun and
comfy.  Plus the SS is getting to be a bit of a collectible now and I'm almost considering
putting it in the living room and just staring at it.  Gorgeous bike!  I'm pretty sure I put
less than 2k on the SS this year.  I guess that puts me at somewhere between 14-15k
miles for the year.  Once back on the bike in a few weeks I'll do my best to raise that
figure for '08.

And this is for bike miles, gang.  Those CRXs and such are fun corner carvers, but they've
got too many wheels and don't lean, unless something's gone drastically wrong.  I've
always had this impression that BMW riders are hard-core year-round riders so let's hear
from someone out there with crazy high mileage.  It is cool to hear that some of your
bikes have accumulated really high miles over the years.  It validates how well made and
generally bulletproof these bikes are.  I'm really looking forward to sampling the R65 soon.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the 600 miles I put on a brand new R1150GS this year.  When
someone asks you to break in a new bike for them you just can't refuse.  But that's
another story . . . .

I would expect to come out on the high side on this one as I don' t own a car and my bikes are my only transport.
Last year I clocked up
The Bimbo (r65LS) 2,300 miles. (Took her off the road in March for a complete rebuild)
Bimbo 2 (r65RT) 12,100 miles (since April)
The wifes Zephyr 320 miles.
Oh and a 12 mile commute on my push bike during the summer.

Tony :)

About 7382 miles on the R65 this year(+/-).  Last year was much better with with my IBA 50cc ride from Jacksonville to San Diego.  Perhaps this year I will get another ride to the west coast!  Did I mention the IBA came through with my certification so I now have the name plate on the bike and I am the only person to complete a 50cc on an R65.  Still waiting for my name to appear on the riders file on the IBA web site though.
