New Owner, old bike
« on: October 21, 2007, 09:17:58 AM »
Hey all, just an introduction.  My name is Chaz, and I just bought (last month) a '79 R65.  VaSteve, from over at BMWBMW, sent me here.  I live in Reisterstown, MD, NW of Baltimore.  The R65 - PO told me his name was Hans! - will be my project bike.  Mostly I ride a '94 R1100RS - Clifford, the big red bike.

So I'll be asking lots of questions as the winter goes along.  Be patient with me!

Welcome Chaz,
Show us some pics of the bike as it is now. And tell us your plan for it.
Restore or Cafe or ???
You can count on comments & advise from us. I have learned much in the few months I have been here.
Again welcome to our little corner of the Beemer world.

Restore or Cafe or ???

Ah, that's the eternal question, isn't it?  Plan for now is to keep it fairly stock, but "restore" is too strong a word.  Renew, maybe?  This bike spent most of it's life on the West Coast, parked on the streets in Oakland, CA, so it's got a lot of surface rust on the frame, and a lot of paint gone on the engine cases.  But mechanically it's in good shape.  So I think the winter tasks will be to pull the engine and get the frame cleaned up - maybe powdercoated? - and replace all the gaskets in the engine.  It seems to be seeping a little oil from nearly every pore!  Oh, and here's a pic for you....
