new member checking in from idaho. i have been lurking around for a little while, and have really enjoyed the great info from the members. thanks for providing a great forum!! i have an 81 r65, and sold my r100s to get it. my personal opinion is the r65 is the true heir to the /2 series. any way, i am looking forward to being a member.

'Welcome Mike,
We're neighbors. I am in Salt Lake City. Where in Idaho are you?
I just bought a 81 R65 couple months ago. Didn't take much work to get it on the road after sitting abandoned for 5 years outside. Very impressive machine.
You can see I got a long ways to go. The journey is the fun part, right?

Welcome Idaho Mike!  You've got some wonderful roads up there to ride on.  I've heard about them.  Never been on them..........yet.  ;)

Troy,

Well , I think you might have left it too late for this year, but expect to see you at the Stomp rally in Grandjean next year.
I mean it is the major rally for your state after all.

We ride down every year, you have such great roads for riding. (especially the dirt  8-) )

Welcome to the forum.

Thanks to everyone for the kind welcome. I live in the "metro" known as Pocatello. Great place to raise a family, fish and ride a BMW!! I have never been to a rally, so that should  a "must do". I learn alot reading the maintance forum. If anyone is travling thru, let me know. I always have a cold one waiting for a new friend. All the best to you and yours.

Welcome Mike, you live in a great area to ride. I think that most people that have not visited the area, would be surprised to see that it is high desert, until you get into the mountainous areas. How many miles on your bike?

Riding all year long since 1993 .
I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

Bob, the bike has right at 50k on the clock. I am the second owner. I paid 2500.00, its very clean, it did not have hard bags though. I am trying to locate some. I originally bought it with my wife in mind, but she never caught "the bmw bug". so........i ride it and sold my r100s! I'm 5'6" and 180 so it really fits my vertically challenged build. My plans are to head up to Yellowstone and see the park with the bike and my wife 2 up. I can't think of a nicer trip, and its an easy ride.

Bob's BMW sell new OEM style bags around $440.00
http://www.bmwbobs.com/

But the best place is too keep tabs on IBMWR site
http://www.ibmwr.org/market/adlist.php?cat=aps
as used bags seem to come up quite freqently

I think you made a wise decision...........in the BMW Motorcycle Buyer’s Guide....the author writes ...........”Few problems are endemic to the R65. In large part they are among the best BMWs ever built. They are easy to work on. Suffer none of the engine problems of their larger brethren, tend to be easy on clutches and transmissions. Functionally there is little wrong with them. “As for me ..................I sure do like mine............it was resurrected after sitting outside under a tarp for 18 years or so..................   welcome to the Clan of ghost  riders. R65's are a beautiful classic!
