Another Newbie

Hi Everyone.  

I decided to join the forum.  :)   I just purchased a '79 R65 and I was looking for lots of technical and not so technical information.  I came across this site and it really seems to fit my needs so here I am.

Other than the Beemer I currently own a 2006 Goldwing.  In the past I have ridden a 2000 Goldwing, a '92 K1100 LT, an 82 Honda Sabre, a '54 Matchless and a 71 Yahama 250.

Now....first question...where can I find a Clymer shop manual for my bike?  I have lots of things to do on the bike.

Your local dealer & indy shop will have manuals. Also @ Amazon & eBay.
And I will ask "The Question" first this time. Got any pics? We all love seeing the various R65's.

No pics yet.  As soon as I figure out how to download my digital camera pics I'll post some.  Plus...there's lots of work to do on the bike before I start taking any pics.

You need the before and after pictures, to document the 'resurrection' process. I don't think your bike could be in any worse shape than what we've seen so far ! Welcome to the site, and ask questions, if you're not sure about something. A little warning on shop manuals, they can contain erroneous information on occasion. I personally have not read a Haynes or Clymer manual, I have a BMW shop manual, and even it contains inaccurate information.

Hello there Mike.
If an idiot like me can work on a beemer then anyone can, and to echo Bob's warning about manuals treat them as guidelines rather than gospel, as they never seem to quite match up with whats on your bike especially if its had a couple of owners.

Hi Mike,
I'm a newbee too.  I just posted a picture of my 1979 R65 a couple of days ago.  I had to do a lot of things to this bike to bring it back to life...I did go off the norm a bit with my color selection, but, it's just paint.  The 1979 is a little different than the following years.  I am sure others are way more knowledgable about R65's, but I will be glad to try and answer any questions you might have...One tip I do have is that if the coils are original to the bike, don't fool around trying track down ignition problems.  Replace them first.  Good luck.

Welcome "Mike and Mike" to our little corner of the BMW universe!  What we lack in numbers, we make up in lunacy and sometimes useful info!  ;D

Hope to see you here as "regulars", and do post some pics of your R65s asap!  We just love to see the "cows" that belong to other members!!
