A couple patches have been added
« on: July 02, 2007, 09:33:34 AM »
Over the weekend I installed the latest security patches to the forum software and also patched in a mod that includes a randomly generated verification code that must be entered at the end of the registration window.  So far, I have not had to delete any obviously bogus users since adding the verification code.  New users still have to respond to the welcome e-mail and complete registration but if the initial code is not entered on the registration page then the account is not even added to the system.  I don't think current users will notice any changes...

I looked through the rest of the newest mods to YABB but didn't find anything that looked interesting.  The YABB 2.2 software is close to being ready to release but I don't know if the hoster will make this available on the server or not.  If it is made available I will update the forum if the new version contains any neat new features.  I am inclined not to as I think I have the software patched to the point where it seems to be pretty stable and functional.

...so this wasn't about R65 patches?  I still don't know on which jacket to install mine.

So far since applying the registration verification code mode there have been no bogus user registered.  Of course, now the error log gets about 60 entries per day but it's easier to clear it than to decide if a user is "real" and manually delete them...  I also started deleting all users that even though they had successfully completed the registration process had never posted anything and had not logged back in for over 120 days.

So, the number of users that is displayed at the bottom of the main page should be reletively accurate as far as our membership is concerned.
