Dropped bike-need brake perch
« on: May 25, 2007, 11:28:00 PM »
So My bike fell over in a parking lot today, one side of the center stand was in a bit of a hole.  At least I got the first drop out of the way and no other damage.   Probably would have been no damage ecept the bars hit a log marking the parking area.  Anyone have an extra brake perch lying around or know a good source.  It broke the part that holds the lever only, master cyclinder is fine and so is brake lever.  Ill post pics tommorow.

Also does anyone know if this part shares with other model years?

edit: seems all bmw bars are same diamter, any reason I could not use the pieces off any K or R that has disc brakes and the same size master cylinder (what size is the master cylinder anyways-seems to be two options for the r65's)  if I got the whole control unit?  Would there be any differneces in the brake lines or throttle cables?

More edits as I figure things out: loooks like I need the 16mm master cylinder and it is rectangular, correct?

My bike is a 1981 with twin front discs and ape calipers.

Also it I have square fluid resevoir while the microfiche shows a round one, was this a year change or could I possibily already have something non-original?

Ill try to get part numbers tommorow when its light.

Thanks
Ben

some one may have did an upgrade for you. you need to get what you have. the master cylinder is a seperate part that bolts on. check the for sale section and look for dons parts he has for sale. i think he had what you wanted.

I'm pretty sure any 81-84 boxer part will fit, and they aren't that much 2nd hand.

I think '81 is the year they changed to the rectangular master cylinder.  Mine has it too.  There should be a number on your master cylinder; that is the size in mm.  I don't remember what mine is; it's different for a single disk front brake, that's why there are two sizes shown in the parts catalog.

Ok after more searching its seems the master cylinders are different but the throttle housing (what I need) is the same all years.  Mine looks to be original.  The twin disc version got the square master cylinder.  Also seems to share with some r100 and r80.  Havent quite sorted what years are good for these.

Looks like Don has the part I need as well as a guy from craigslist who is parting out his collection of 6 BMW twins (4 parts 2 runners)  If anyone else needs stuff his add is on sfbay craigslist and he is willing to ship.

Luckily my girlfriend is going out of town so I can use her car while I get this sorted.

Thanks guys
Ben
