Hello everyone.  Just bought my first BMW.  A 1981 r65.  Been wanting one since I bought my first bike 5 years ago and luckily found a good one.  In the meantime I had a cb350 suzuki gs850 (poor mans bmw) suzuki gs1150 and then a kawi ninja 750.  Had a lot of fun in the corners with the ninja but no fun anywhere else so decided to go back to something a bit more versatile.  The PO was meticulous and also did some nice upgrades.  KONI shocks, front end work, 8 gallon dakar tank etc.  Also some beautiful white paint with black pinstripes.  I also just realized the bikes toolkit is actually complete and even includes an air pump.  Wish all manufacters had such foresight.

Hi Ben!

That is a lot of bikes in just 5 years - well I guess.  Back in "the day" I was upgrading every 2 years (as soon as the loan was paid off...  ::) ) until I found my R65.  That was in 1980 and I quit looking.  I am happy to add to it whenever possible, but I'm pretty sure I will die with this bike.  

I chuckled at your "poor man's BMW".  That was what I coined my Yamaha XS750 that I bought in 1978.  It was a nice enough bike, but as soon as the note was paid, I went hunting...

I, too, cannot wait to see a picture or two of your bike (gas tank!).

Nice bike, Ben.  Very clean and well kept.  I like that big gas tank.  I'll bet that can take you many miles down the road without stopping for gas.   ;D

So you're from the Bay Area, eh?  There are a few of us here from somewhere around the Bay.  I live in Sonoma County.  

There's a great BMW Rally in Auburn over Memorial Day weekend - the 49er Rally.  You plan on going to that?  Google 49er Rally and you'll find the website.

Yeah I definetly got lucky on this one, the whole bike is as good as it looks, even down to the little details.  The PO said he could get about 360 miles when he filled the tank all the way up.  Normally only put in 5 or 6 gallons as 8 gallons really ads to the weight.   Nice to finally own a bike that is exactly how I want it.  

Wish I could make the rally but I am a sailing instructor and its quite difficult to get weekends off.

A sailing instructor, huh?  Boy, that's one occupation you don't hear mentioned every day!  What size sailboats do you usually offer instruction in?  Ever been out on one of those 10-meter yachts like we see on the America's Cup races?

I teach mostly on J/24's a 24 ft keelboat.  never been on many race boats as I have always been more of a cruiser.  Sailed some on big boats but not fast ones, think heavy offshore passagemakers.  Think I might start racing this summer though.  Looks fun and SF is one of the best places in the world for it.
