Brake discs/pads on sale...
« on: February 20, 2007, 10:29:07 PM »
Don't know if this is really a good deal or not but http://www.bikebandit.com has all of their EBC stuff on sale right now at 25% off.  At $178.54 rotors are still a fortune but if you absolutely had to have one it might make it a bit easier to swallow...

Thanks for the info, I just ordered a set  EBC floating steel rotors for the '81 R65. My original rotors are worn to .175 in. thick, minimum thickness in the shop manual is .181 in. So I got my money's worth out of these rotors. Also about $100 cheaper than OEM. Looks like it's going to be a costly maintenance period for the next month or two.

That happens when they get this old.  My big one was last year at this time.

Would you say, considering the direction of the arrow in this picture from their website, that this is a right-hand rotor?  It was taken from the EBC Front Left Rotor (BMW R 65 T 1980-1985) page.

Rob, I really can't complain about the cost of owning this bike, the last major expense was in 1998 when I had the valves and seats replaced, along with the exhaust flange thread repair on both cylinder heads. Everything else has been what I consider 'consumable'  / normal wear items. You really can't justify putting money in my case , a 26 year old motorcycle that's worth at best $2000. I estimate the cost of this maintenance cycle to be about $1200. But the bike is like part of the family, and I can't see getting rid of it in the foreseeable future ( after my death maybe!).

I never meant to imply that you were complaining.

Until I find another significant other, my R65 will have to be the brunt of my "lavishments".  (is that a word?)

That is to say, I LOVE to spend money on Brownie!

Rob, if the arrow indicates the direction of rotation then my uneducated guess would lean toward this being a r/h rotor...  But, if it's supposed to point forward, then they are probably as confused as I am!  [smiley=mad.gif]

I googled around and couldn't find any other for less than $200.  I sure hope it makes a difference.  Trouble is, my original rotor feels fine, but those grooves are so deep...

Do you think I should have gotten the tattoo, instead?

Only sure way to see if you need a rotor, is to take a micrometer and measure the thickness. The minimum is .181 in., my rotor measured .175, and consider that this is the high spots the grooves are significantly deeper.

Yeah, Bob, you really got your money's worth out of that one!  ;)  Glad I'm not the only one that bucks the "I might as well replace it because it's so old..." trap!

Yeah Bob, I remember measuring mine last year and saying "well... it still works fine"...

Trust me, I wouldn't have spent that kind of money willy-nilly.

So, Rob, did you actually order one of the EBC rotors?  You need to do a photo essay when it comes in and give us your impressions, chronicle the installation, etc...

Yes, I ordered it last night after work.

Chronicle it's installation???
You mean, remove the front wheel.  Take off 5 bolts, take off the old rotor, put on the new one, replace said 5 bolts, and replace the wheel, right?

Please tell me you were joking!

I do plan on taking a close-up photo this weekend of the deep grooves on my original to post here, though.  (with measurements...)

Yeah, I guess I was, but you know how much some people enjoy step-by-step pictorials...  A couple of comparison side-by-side (front and rear?) shots would be interesting, though...

No problem.  As a borderline photographer, I'll happily accept any assignment!  8-)
