Another New Guy in GA
« on: January 20, 2007, 05:49:23 PM »
Greetings members,
I'm a new member from Athens, GA area.  I'm also new to the R65, just bought an '81 today.  I'm psyched about it, too. I'm looking forward to your tips and ideas and I'm sure I'll have lots of questions.  I'd like to make contact to other members in my area.

Thanks in advance,
dd

Welcome!

It should go without saying, but one never knows...you are aware of Boxerworks in Watkinsville, right?  Just want to be sure.  Anything you need, Matt will have it or can get it, and do it with a smile.
Any service work you might need, Nathan and his head wrench, Dean can help you if you need it.

You are fortunate to have them right down the road. :)

Oh yeah.  Nathan is legend in these parts, both for his BMW expertise and his drums.  I was just at Boxerworks today in fact and talked to Nathan before making the purchase from a friend up the road.  Turns out Nathan's the one who has done the prior maint on this bike anyway.

I'll try to get pics up tomorrow after I get 'er cleaned up a bit.  Not sure about the full Windjammer faring, but we'll see.

First things first, gotta get 'er started...

Thanks,
DD

The first time you get caught in the rain you'll fall in love with the Windjammer!  ;) They are a bit large but provide fantastic protection.  I've had Windjammers on two bikes and loved them.  Is yours the Windjammer SS with the integral signal lights?

Yup, integral signal lights.  Former owner couldn't find the keys to the compartments, but maybe those will be easy to replace.

The faring is black, but the bike is teal blue.  Also came with the BMW bags and Reynolds rack/rest.  Cool stuff hanging all over this bike -- a bit much for my taste, but we'll see.

Now Rob,
don't go knocking the fairings - they were quite the piece of fiberglass back in the day..
Not all could be as nice looking as the integrated RS/RT fairings, and the 'jammers did
great duty on everything you could tour on - CB750Ks, GoldWings, and beemers !

Welcome from sunny SC, DD!  I live in the NW corner of SC in a small town by the name of Easley, near Clemson.  Maybe we could meet up and go for a ride together sometime!  I never see another R65 around these here parts!  It'd be cool to ride with someone else who can appreciate the R65!  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

SC
That's not too far away.  I was just in Anderson yesterday with my other Beemer ('88 535 cage).  Lots' of pretty places to ride around NE GA and NW SC and SW NC and SE TN.

BTW all, still looking for headlight and signal stalks so I can take off that Windjammer.  Any motorcycle boneyards around your way?  Passed a big one in Anderson, but looked all HD.

Don't know about the boneyards - the ones around here only have Japanese stuff - but here's another headlight on ebay.

Bill and John here from over in Atlanta!!!!   :D

Have you met the BOXERWORKS folks in Waynesboro (Watkinsville??)  Sw from Athens!!!!.  Go see Nathan and Dean!!!  (I wonder if the coffee maker is up and running yet?)

Advise - Learn how to maintain your bike!  It will save you lots of money.  Get advise on how to do your maintenance here!  (Beware the spline lube.....)  When you get ready to do a certain procedure tell the gang what you are going to do and somebody will chime up on the "pitfalls".  Go to the SNOWBUM web site and read technical articles!  Go to the AIRHEAD website and read techinical articles.  Keep an eye (lurk) on the BOXERWORKS Forum, questions are not frowned upon.  In fact they are encouraged.

Join the BMW Owners Group of Georgia (Jawja)   www.bmwmoga.info  We ride lots.

Your 81 is a really fun bike to ride.  No settling will occur during the riding of your bike (unless a tire is punctured.)   ;)
