Correct sidestand and how?
« on: June 05, 2008, 11:39:26 AM »
Hello,
I'm pretty sure that I have the right sidestand for my 84 r65ls ( It is pictured on this link above #2, the one on the right.
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=0365&mospid=47853&btnr=46_0053&hg=46&fg=15)
 but...
It attaches okay onto the part which protrudes downward from the frame. It bolts onto this part with the hex headed bolt through the brass bushing and swings properly. I have not been able to figure the rest out. I am pretty sure that this stand is a BMW part exactly like I had on this bike many years ago. Can anyone help with instructions and/or a closeup picture? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

The part that has the hole and a slot, with two small holes at the other end, goes over a pin welded to the frame.

The plate fits in to the groove on the pin, then the springs attach to the two small holes in the plate, and then the other ends of the springs attach to the pins on the side stand itself.

It can be a bit of a struggle to get the springs on, but the use of needle nose vise-grip type pliers, help a lot with the installation.

A small amount of blue locktite on the threads of the bolt wouldn't be a bad idea either, the bolt loosens up over time, and is often over looked until it gives you problems.

Rob, thank you for that clear concise info. I did have the sidestand put together as you explained however, it is still a no go. Here is the situation:
Put in place as you have explained the stand holds itself up, but only at about 85% and not tightly. It won’t hold tight at the top, at where the rubber bumper is supposed to stop. It hangs a bit. Are the springs too weak or the wrong springs?
Also, and perhaps more importantly, although the brass bushing seems to be the perfect size the stand ‘fork’ is not. The stand fork being that space at the top of the stand that fits over, or surrounds the projecting ‘tang’ with the hole that houses the bushing. Attaching the fork over the inset bushing and tightening the bolt gives far too much side to side travel. If the bushing and surrounding metal is, say, ¼”, than the space in the fork is nearly that much again???
I look at the OEM picture and feel certain that I have all the right parts but….
About a year ago I tried this sidestand install thing, went mad and put it back in the box. I’m somewhat more determined this time.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give.
Mike
