How to display your own personal avatar
« on: November 13, 2006, 10:15:32 AM »
The forum comes with a variety of avatars but you can "create" a custom one juast for you.

1.  Clisk on "Profile."
2.  Click on "Modify."
3.  Click on "Options."
4.  Leave "Personalized Picture:" set to "no pic."
5.  Put your desired image on the web somewhere.
6.  Enter url to your image on the "I have my own pic:" line.

That's it!  The image will be auto-scaled to 80x60 and must be a gif, png, jpg or jpeg file.

Enjoy!

Maybe where you have it stored doesn't allow linking?

Hmmm, your furball looks a bit squashed.  I scaled the avatar window so that a 640x480 image would scale with correct proportions.

It looks fine to me, Justin.  No problems.

Hey, guys...

I don't have any sort of online webspace to put images right now (can't afford it).  Is there any sort of "free parking space" where I could temporarily put a personal avatar in order to get it set up to show?  I want to put a pic up of Britta again!

Hey John,

E-mail me a pic of Britta and I will put it up on my flickr page.  Or you can start your own.  It's a free service.

Bill,

Where do I go for this "flickr" deal?  Is it simple enough for a Homer Simpson-type like me to be able to do it?  ("D'oh!!")

HI John,

http://www.flickr.com/people/82748313@N00/  is my site but if you go to www.flickr.com you can register.  Its a YAHOO company so it already knew me from when we registered on the temp board.  I have't done much with my site but its there.  I plan to upload some photos later on.

A great example of an aquaintence that uses Flickr to great effect would be Lisa Goldman from Israel.

Here is her site http://www.flickr.com/photos/38128614@N00/

It was easy to set up.

Well, I just tried to put up my own avatar of Britta, thanks to Justin for putting my pic up on his webspace.  I followed those directions above, but only got the dreaded white "?" in the small blue square.  Crap. :-[  Any idea what I did wrong? Since I've tried it twice now (with the same results each time), I have no clue at this point.  :-/

The address line in your profile defaults to having an http:// already in it.  I edited this, removing the "extra" one and all is good with the world...

I have to say, John, that it looked pretty funny reading all your posts saying you couldn't get your avatar to display... when it was right there all the time.  It's weird how when you change a sig or avatar, it changes it for every post you've ever made.

Well, first and foremost, THANKS, JUSTIN!!!  You're a class act! [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

I might have been able to figure it out after a while.  (After all, I am in the middle of a web development class at school!)  I guess I'm just kind of burned out by the time I get home at the end of the day, and don't especially feel like trying to figure out something like why my avatar doesn't load.  My brain is fried from trying to get a grip on Intermediate Algebra!  :-/
