Color choice
« on: April 12, 2017, 08:10:21 PM »
I recently found a Wixom top cased at a yard sale and am planning on adding it to my R65LS. I need to refinish it in order to add it and would like to get suggestions from the asylum on a color choice. I have seen pics of some gorgeous R65's on here and value the opinion of the members.

My bike is mostly a pearl white with a black saddle and panniers. I could:

1. Paint it black like the panniers but I am afraid it will look rear heavy with all that black at the rear of the bike.

2. Paint it all white (not quite sure how that will look.)

3. Paint in black with a white lid.

4. Paint it black with a white lid and paint the lids on the panniers white to match. (might make it look too much like a police motorcycle).

Any and all comments and suggestions are welcome.

I'd say maybe the white over black or straight white.

That box is sure a monster!

Solid black or black with minor white accent (like a small horizontal strip of white).

Is that "white" reflective on your panniers?  Maybe match that?

Black by all means and tie it in with the bags with the reflective tape.

Seems like the general consensus is to go black. That was my first thought so it would blend in with panniers better. A coat of a high build primer from a few feet away to get a spatter texture followed by a low gloss black should do the trick. I may try a strip of the white/black reflective tape around the lid to see how that looks.

In passing may I make the general comment that your white R65 is a very good looking bike.

Almost good enough to sway me from my long held belief that BMWs should always be black.

Black it is.

Looks 1/2 the size of when it was blue, well done!

You're right, Joe, it doesn't look like the monster it did in the beginning.

It is still a monster. It will hold a full face helmet, gloves and a jacket without having to press down the lid to close the latches. The neat thing is it attaches using dzus fasteners and goes on and off in a couple of minutes.

Wow, that's pretty much what I had in my head with my suggestion.  Nice job.
