Just purchased a 1980 R/65 for a project bike. I look forward to a lot of fun and will probably be asking a lot of questions (using the search function first[ch128076]) so thank you all in advance. I did a great deal of reading/ lurking as a guest before pulling the trigger on this bike.

Thanx for the welcome gents!  Not sure what type of fairing, cheap aftermarket I suspect. Needs a windscreen so one of the things on the list will be to try and source one.

Finally got around to getting her up on the lift and drained the oil. Smells very strongly of gas. The petcock was left on when I bought it and the owner said they couldn't get it to start. I am hoping the petcock being left on was the cause of both the gas smell now and the no start then (tank was empty when I got it home).

Am I being naive to think a petcock left on for days could lead to gas in the crankcase?  I am changing the oil now as well as filter, new plugs/ wires then check the petcock itself to make sure it works, then try and fire it for the first time.

Am I forgetting something before I try and crank it? (I will also put some gas in the tank[ch128540])

Any input is appreciated

If a float was stuck and the overflow tube was clogged I'm guessing it would be possible for gas to run into a cylinder and past the rings if the gaps were in the right spot...

ALWAYS turn the fuel tap to the off position when you shut the engine down .

The Bing carbs have a reputation to occasionally have a float stick and flood the engine with fuel .

Also, don't leave the bike on the side stand for extended periods of time, oil seeps into the combustion chamber on the left cylinder and smokes a lot on start up .

Welcome Brad! Great looking bike with a S-fairing style. Love that! My 2 cents that I finally learned....check that the fill cap on the final drive at the rear wheel is slightly lifted off the nut...it is the breather for the FD and needs about 3/16" gap.....the 1980 may have another way of Final Drive breather so others can correct me & help you check.

The reason I caution you is that I never knew this and by using a socket to torque the filler cap down I inadvertently pressed the breather (mushroom shaped) cap down too much. Let us knew if you get FD gear oil on your wheel rims...any leaks??
