I've used a 99 cent butane lighter for that stuff for over 20 years!

ok just changed the oil and filter last night. i got the hinged filter on accident but i called a BMW mechanic friend of mine and he said it was okay. i dropped the oil pan to clean any sludge that may have been in there and also removed and cleaned the pump strainer. before i put the pan back on, i took a scotch brite pad to it and the oil filter cover and they look like new parts! i dont know if im gonna use the pad anymore tho because it seems to scratch the metal, it looks good but you have to rub in 2 directions either up and down or side to side or else parts of it object will look weird.

i mounted up the mufflers and they look great! just gotta find someplace to mount the bracket because its quite snug but i dont want them falling off the bike or bouncing up and down. because of the headers, it makes them stick out too, which is a really cool look. ill post some pics tonight.

and i think it was in an earlier post that someone said that an oil pan plug whould plug the holes for the pulse air in the cylnders, i tried it last night and i didnt work, i dont know where i'm gonna get the right one cuz the hardware stores by me dont have metric plugs. i dont want to crimp off the fitting that went there before as ive seen that its an option...i'll figure something out.

The M16X1 plugs are Oil Head drain plugs not the Air Head oil drain plugs

ITS ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D!!!!!!! [smiley=evil.gif] [smiley=evil.gif] [smiley=ROTFLMAO.gif]!!! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! and it sounds so NICEEEE! i still havent got any front brake or air filter but i didn't ride it and i don't live in a smoggy dusty city so i thought, eh....and OH MAN is it SWEET!!!! BUT there are problems [smiley=furious3.gif]... i hear a little squeak, and it doesnt really sound like a squeak its like when you put your mouth together and suck in air. i think i've heard of something like this before and i think the sound was coming from my carbs (btw: i still havent got the vacuum port screws, if anyone has some or knows the size and length i can get some at the hardware store, i was there today and i was like "crap" cuz i didnt know what to get). also i need to call milwaukee bmw, chicago bmw, or motorwerks to get that MC rebuild. i've decided not to get SS lines, i cant spare the money, i think i want custom lines because of the clipons.

i still have engine problems but i fixed the one cylnder problem with the spark plugs, now its dead spots. even after a good warm up i dont have good throttle response at all. although i've never known anything else and have gotten used to it, everyone thats heard it says that it isnt right. when i get my licence, hopefully soon so i can take the beginner riding course, i can take it to this BMW mechanic that's in my club. If anyone has ever been to the Blackhawk Region BMW Club Annual Flea Market, Earve Brauer, runs it and is the guy that i'm talking about.

Just to put it out there, the Flea Market is gonna be in April and the exact date is in the MOA mag. Its at the Pecatonica fairgrounds in Pecatonica, Illinois. I doubt the bike will be there but my club and i will...

OH BTW when i changed my oil filter, the clymer said that the metal shim was "recommended," not needed and whoever put it on last messed it up (scary) so it was all bent beyond straightning so i didn't put it back on. also when i put the cover back on, th infamour white o-ring wouldn't stay in the groove part so i put it on the outter rim of the cover, that was okay right........

awaffa,

The oil ring shouldn't be treated/considered lightly.  If you have a caliper, you should measure the distance from the outside of the engine case to the inside
lip of the oil "canister" that the oil filter goes in.  This will tell you how many metal shims you may need to use - we had a thread on this a month or two back.
In all cases, one really should use the metal shim so that the white o-ring isn't cut/damaged by the edge of the canister/oil filter hole.  If the O ring (the $3000
o-ring thread) loses its seal, your oil circulation in the engine can be severely degraded, with the end result being needing new connecting rod bearing and crank.

As long as it ends up in the right place its Ok (Between the cover and the end of the canister).  No Shim?  Get a new one and put it in first.  Then comes the white O-ring then the filter cover.  The shim should come with the filter kit from the dealer.  I use both the hinged filter and the straight filter depending on what I can get.  I like the double front light setup.  Hmmmmm carb vacuum screws?  Go to one of the online web sites that have parts fiches and look up the carbs on the 1979-80 Sept R65.  The screws (and the fiber washers) you need will be on that fisch.  Really small those.....

Good luck.

Thank you Semper Gumby! and so that screw isnt something to be had at a home depot or someplace eh? if anyone's seen "The Princess Bride" one can relate to the line, "I hate waiting." Going through dealers takes SOOOOO long! actually i was thinking about getting a rubber cap for it, kind of like how there's a cap on the bleeder nipple on the brake caliper...yes, no, maybe so? and about that shim...i didnt get the BMW oil filter i got an Emgo so no extra shims. what do i do?

Gotta have shims.  Stop by the dealer & get another "O"ring as well as a shim or two.  Pull the cover, put in (at least) a shim, then the new "O" ring, and if your clearance allows - a gasket.
Check the previous threads about the $2000, or $3000 "O" ring.  VERY important!
Neat looking bike.  Welcome aboard & good luck.

Harrison, I have a kit that contains the block-off screws, fiber washers, and stainless steel allen-head top cover screws.  PM me if interested...

Just to echo the others. The shim is mandatory! No if ands or butts! If you have installed the O ring without a shim it is now most likely useless. Do not run the engine until you have a new shim and O ring!! I have a supply of them on hand at all times. I will gladly throw a shim & ring in the mail. No foolin' ya can't run it like that! The oil filter installation is critical on these bikes. I may run cheap spark plugs, Chinese tires, discount shocks, home made seat but I will not shortcut the filter installation, don't you either!

LOL those lights are goin dracula on my battery!!!! not as bad as i thought but they pretty much shut off when i try to start the bike so i'm trying to find a place to mount a switch to turn it and the tail light off...hooking everything up isn't a problem, its finding a place to put your switches/gadgets on a naked bike...the only thing i know of that could help me mount SOMETHING is this bracket thing that i've seen on a lot of airheads that mounts a power outlet thingy on the top shock mount. anybody know where to find these? also i need to find a place to mount my ign. switch, stealth mode switch, and digital gauges. i think i've had a post on where i could mount my ign. switch in the battery cover but the only way i'd do that would be if i had an extra one and i don't. I've heard of putting the ign switch inside the seat lock if it was drilled out a little bit but that's not an option either as i like that function. i'll be posting more later on in the week because i still got some things in the mail, my digi. gauge for one!

My headlight shuts off whenever the starter is engaged.  There is a relay to make it so.  Is your wiring still basically stock?

yea it's all stock, i got a new wiring harness a few months ago as i shorted a wire out and burned up the rest. and unless all of the bmws shut off the headlight, i'm pretty sure mine doesn't although i haven't had a headlight on in over a year i think. i'm gonna go take some pics now (finally right...).
